This is now part of SD's (and perhaps the club's too) PR campaign to condition fans for League 2 football next year, which is becoming ever more likely.
Sustaining a position in the FL is probably a realistic goal, given the resources that the club has and its determination to balance the books.
SD's scored an own goal by proclaiming that the squad he assembled was going to pass other League 1 clubs off the park. Now he's back pedalling so fast, relegation to League 2 will be badged as an achievement.
Personally I think the club should aspire to do better than that, because if you set your sights low, then you're on a slippery slope.
The fact that former League clubs have vanished into the Vanarama is due in part because there isn't a massive gap between the bottom half of L1, L2 and the top clubs in the National League, as Eastleigh aptly demonstrated. The best way to avoid the trap door out of the FL is to avoid League 2, not settle for life in it.
