Pompey and the Piss Pot Trophy...

Reaction to EFL Trophy changes in a statement from PFC.

At the recent EFL summer conference, plans were revealed to include 16 category one Premier League academy/under-21 sides in the 2016/17 EFL Trophy, in addition to the 48 clubs in Div 1 and 2. Portsmouth Football Club argued strongly against these proposals and voted accordingly. However, a majority of League One and League Two clubs voted in a favour of the pilot scheme.
Portsmouth Football Club are disappointed with the outcome, but we are part of a democratic organisation and accept that our views will not always be shared by others.

The way I see it is a one season trial, there will be 16 regional groups of 4 clubs per group. The top 2 of each group will progress to the knockout stages. There are issues still to be clarified, such as the number of first teamers to be included among other things, but a democratic process was taken so both Luton (that I know of) and Pompey will now be supportive of the new competition”

I've never seen Pompey play in the competition I call the Junk Cup. My view has always been we play too much first team football anyway but I know that the hierarchy at Accrington for example want to play more. I have always been amazed the number of fans we have taken to Yeovil and Exeter for example in this competition. I won't be one of them even if we go down the motorway. I wonder what Hampshire Police's view is of a potential m27 clash ??

I guess it's another marketing ploy. I remember MK Dons beating Man U 4-0 in the League Cup (or whatever it is) - Manure put out a team that was virutally reserves/youth but there was still a full house.

But really - who wants to watch our first team versus Scum academy side?

The only way we can vote & get are way is not to attend as fans but would that damage the club if a home tie & there were running costs, I don't intend to pay to watch this competition and hardly look out for the result.

Morning all. Not spoken to one person in favour of this yet. You echo my thoughts Lee, I hope we put the reserves out whoever we play.

That's one of the things they'll bank on. Maybe fans should start telling EFL what a bad idea this is and plan to boycott it.

As somebody said to me, it is somewhat ironic to say the least that premiership clubs will be able to play their youngsters in this superfluous competition but if a Football League club play their youngsters they will be fined.
