There have been many exciting nights under the Fir Park floodlights and the eleven goal thriller between Motherwell and Aberdeen in October 1999 ranks high in the list - even though we lost! - External Link
Yep. I remember saying when 4-2 down at half time that we could win. Not quite.
An absolute embarrassment of a night and the fact that some of our supporters look back on this debacle with a degree of fondness is indicative of the loser mentality that we are riddled with from top to bottom. Even on this very board, on the date this game was played, there is a reminder and a link posted to it? And why? What in Gods name was there to celebrate that night? Aberdeen were at that time a truly woeful outfit, a national embarrassment who hadn't scored an away goal all season and only scored three goals in their first ten matches, hadn't won a single match and yet they roll into Fir Park, put six past us and some Motherwell fans like to look back on this occasion with misty eyed awe. Truly pathetic.
Because the joy of supporting Motherwell comes from the accumulation of games and memories - some happy, some not - and this one stands out for obvious reasons. There is a reason this game gets talked about so many years after the event which would simply not happen had we won a ****er 1-0, as much as I'd have preferred that at the time.
Yes, but bad memories are best left in the past and not 'celebrated' as some seem to do with this particular debacle. Had we won that game then I could see why it would be remembered so fondly, but we didn't did we? We FAILED big time.
That night was one of the most embarrassing in the clubs history.
Each to their own...there's clearly a bit of masochism in supporting Motherwell, if you don't get a rueful smile from some of our misadventures you'll just end up a miserable git moaning on an internet forum all the time :-)
