I've just been listening to an excellent Radio 4 play "Britt Marie Was Here" which has a lot of football references in it. I was so taken by one exchange between two characters that I thought I would share it here. The play is actually written by a Swedish playwright but in the English version the referenced football club was changed presumably from a Swedish club to Tottenham Hotspur. I've changed it to Rotherham United and I think this rings true for most of us...
A conversation between a football fan and someone who knows absolutely nothing about football.
"Just so you know, Dad was a Rotherham United fan"
And what does that mean?
"If you support Rotherham you always give more love than you get back"
I assume they're a bad team then?
"They're the worst kind of bad team because they're almost good. They make you hope, so you go on loving them and they carry on finding more and more innovative ways of disappointing you".
Why do you support them then?
"Because I can't not"
