Thread: Ex-footballers who are after dinner speakers!

Ex-footballers who are after dinner speakers!

I have had the misfortune to be at quite a few of these moronic events over the last few years and have deeply regretted every experience.

This dumbing down of culture really reaches its nadir in the shallow, vacuous, peurile laddish humour of the ex-footballer.

I am sure, ex-footballers must have a manual of anecdotes which they all share, because none of the stories are original.

The "banter" about who was the worst dressed, who was the changing room prankster, who was the biggest drinker, is like listening to a tape recording of County Borough highlights.

Can we not use our NYS for something more educational, or something more culturally and spiritually enlightening than an evening with Paul Merson?

Courses on basic football tactics for fans!

    What they are
    Who uses them
    Why use them
    When to use them &
Where have they been used ( examples )

I would pay to listen to a "Respected" football practitioner stating the facts of life relating to football tactics and management.

I attended a supporters club seminar in the supporters club headquarters at the bottom of Millmoor Lane.

    The speaker was :

    Lawrie McMenemy MBE

A good pint and some great stories - but I think the "Tactical" seminar would go down a treat.....

Paul Merson must be rubbing his f@cking hands together.

Pi55ed and gambled his career away.

Saved from the gutter by Soccer Saturday needing a clown for their show!!!

Same as George Best.....he told everyone what he did with his money......

1/3 he wasted on fast cars

1/3 he wasted on fast women

The rest he just frittered away !

    Can't fault the man !

Only been to one , at a charity event at Aston Hall some years ago and the footballer in question was Geoff Hurst, and a more pleasant, knowledgable, and interesting gentleman would be hard to find. As far I could tell he remained sober all night, and stayed long after his talk had finished and was still chatting informally well into the small hours . I came away with a football signed by him with the question I asked him answered... "It WAS over the line"

That's actually a decent point Lincs. The dismal evenings of puerile anecdotes, I have witnessed, were all footballers who had retired in the last 10 years or so. I wasn't really thinking of players from Hurst's era.. I think there is no doubt that footballers from a previous generation on the whole, were well-mannered, dignified and much more humble than the current crop. I think the creeping malaise of secularisation has no doubt had a negative influence on footballers from the current era.

Well put IBS, sounds about right to me, where I lived as a youngster ( Chemist Lane ) adjoining a row of terraced houses ( Holland St.) where 3 or 4 of the Millers team used to live, Noble, Quairney and others, and they were part of the community.

Great idea. Remember to invite Stubbsy along to listen when you get one sorted.

Good call that Gorky - who better to run a seminar about tactics and football. A football legend at Everton and a respected coach that Chelsea trusted with one of their prized assets.

But when Stubbs went - so did Issy....

    So Chelsea rate Stubbs highly...

Gorky thinks stubbs is S##T !

    Let's think!

Who's judgement would you respect............tough call that one !
