Gardner and McBurnie join Reds

Barnsley signed Aston Villa midfielder Gary Gardner and Swansea City striker Oliver McBurnie on season-long loans on transfer deadline day.

The Reds had agreed a deal for 21-year-old striker McBurnie in early May but the Welsh club delayed letting him join and Barnsley only announced the deal at 11.50pm last night.

Gardner, 25, was announced earlier in the evening and will had experience to Barnsley's midfield, having played 110 career games including 16 in the Premier League for Villa.

Meanwhile, the Reds let out-of-favour attacking midfielder Alex Mowatt join League One Oxford United on loan for the rest of the season. Barnsley turned down a bid for Andy Yiadom early in the day as it was well off the asking price and the Ghana international has remained at Oakwell.
