Celtic snatch a point after a late dodgy penalty

Motherwell came within a couple of minutes of ending Celtic's unbeaten run until Willie Collum intervened to award the softest of soft penalties two minutes from time. We had to settle for a point after a 1-1 draw. - External Link

Players are subjected to scrutiny after a match by the compliance officer for incidents not seen at the time of the incident by the referee, these incidents are scrutinised time and time again from every angle. So why can’t the same criteria apply to refereeing decisions and retrospective punishments handed it to them or are they absolved from any scrutiny and punishment.

That criteria only applies when a decision goes against Celtic, or for Rangers nowadays it seems. The compliance officer was probably behind that goal celebrating his team being handed a point last night. Ain't that right Anthony Bhoy?

But are they? Post match scrutiny by the Compliance Officer was always a random, hit or miss, process largely influenced by the media. Of late he's been pretty much anonymous and it doesn't seem like Sinclair will be cited for his olympic style simulation on Sunday.

Refereeing is very much a black box process in that nobody except referees and their bosses knows what the hell is going on.

To me this is the much bigger problem than diving...I've made my peace with that just being part of the game now.

But referees - much like they do in Germany - should be able/encouraged/forced to give the reasoning behind their decisions. They will obviously make mistakes, particularly when players are diving all over the place, but I'd like to know whether Thomson and Collum consider they made errors on Sunday/Wednesday or if they deem brushing shirts is enough contact to merit a penalty if the player chooses to go down.

And when the situation occurs, they should also be encouraged to say I didn't give X a penalty because in my opinion he took a dive last week/month and wasn't convinced he didn't do so again.

Seems to me this is what so called referees are implying/applying to Louis Moult every time he is fouled in the box

Moult probably doesn't help himself with some loud appeals for what look like highly speculative claims...you see the pair Celtic just got and can understand why he asks for everything but if it's counter-productive what's the point?

It certainly happened back in the day with David Clarkson who won us several highly debatable penalties only to discover he then got turned down for two or three absolute stonewallers - culminating in a red card against ICT iirc, where he got wrongly booked for diving and then a second yellow for complaining about the incorrect decision.

They are. Referees can be demoted or rested for a week or two after bad performances, it's often just not publicised, presumably because it would look bad for the SFA. (Also seems a bit harsh on the lower leagues, having to put up with the refs who weren't good enough for "big games".)
