Oh the silly time of the season again with the new years honours list which is so far removed from the truth as possible.

Honours for exceptional work eh, like the barber the other year getting a gong for cutting Cameron's hair, also talk of the guy (I forget his name) who fought tooth and nail to keep us in the EU... .. . .. . . . and failed.

Totally outdated, degraded by past (and probably present) "winners", its not fit for purpose.

All very nice and cosy isn't it, more money and priviledge on top of his generous MPs pension and his exceedingly generous EU pension. All paid for by us mug taxpayers of course.

You are right there are some folk getting these awards for odd reasons. However the vast majority of awards go to people who have gone above and beyond in the public interest often for unpaid activities, charity work etc.
I have known quite a few such folk and they get immense pleasure from being recognised as having contributed to the public good, and the chance to visit a Palace and meet Royalty with their families there. Lots of countries have similar awards, even Russia.
I have had the privilege of making and supporting nominations in the past and maybe we should nominate who we want to be recognised for good work.

Sir Sean of Proudsville perhaps? Danny Ings for his charity work?

However Nick Clegg is operating against the public interest on Brexit - pity we don’t get asked our views on the proposals. These political awards to failed politicians should be stopped., at least until they have shown they have given unpaid public service elsewhere.

    Very ironic if true.

When in coalition, Nick Clegg had an agreement with the Tories to reform the Lords, making it essentially an elected house, and to reform the voting system.

The Tories scuppered the "deal" and Labour would not support it.
Result? The Tory/Labour old boys network is still in action.

So...as the saying goes, if you can't beat them, join them.

I have had the honour and pleasure to meet Nick Clegg and I can tell you that he is a totally honourable, intelligent man who certainly has his heart in the right place. He abhors our unequal society and did as much as anyone else has managed recently to redress the balance.

Pupil premium, free school meals, £10K starting rate for income tax, green investment bank. The 2014 Care Act would have gone a long way to address the growing problem of Care provisions in the country, but the Tories subsequently dumped it.
All the above, and many more things, were Lib Dem initiatives during their time in coalition.

Because of our dreadful media he was castigated, and remembered only for, failing to get free tuition fees in the coalition agreement.

    Arise Sir Nick!

I’m sure he is a god man at heart and the Liberals helped create the recovery after Labours disaster. So fair points, however don’t the Liberals have over 100 members in the House of Lords?
By accepting a peerage he will add to that and leave any political ambitions behind h8m. What’s he doing now?

    Evening OC, Seasons Greetings!

I'm afraid that the media have well and truly scuppered his political ambitions by the way they have treated him.

I know for a fact that he hates the way that the House of Lords is set up, but as I said above, he tried but failed to get it reformed due to Labour and the Tories supporting the status quo.

So, as I also said above, if you can't beat them then join them.

In Nicks case, I believe he will be a force for good in the Lords - not just turning up to collect his £300 per day.

Apart from writing a column in the "i" newspaper I don't know what he is doing.

A shocking waste of talent in my opinion.

Seasons greetings to you too. 59
Yes a wasted talent, but now an undemocratic one. His book How to Stop Brexit doesn’t help and I gather he talks to EU negotiators for that purpose which is unethical in my view. He is also an Arsenal fan.

Yes, he wears his heart on his sleeve and is almost as passionate as I am to work closely with the EU.

He obviously has built up very close relationships within the EU over the years, so of course he will keep in contact with them.

He is a 100% conviction politician, and they are very rare these days. I admired Margaret Thatcher for her strong convictiond despite disagreeing with almost everything she said. Tony Benn was another one.

I actually got his book for a Christmas present so please don't spoil it for me!

As for being an Arsenal fan...that is a tough one.
