Experienced defender arrives at Oakwell on a permanent deal.
Barnsley Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of 31-year-old defender Matt Mills on a contract until the end of the 2017/18 campaign.
A 6ft 3’ central defender, Mills has a huge amount of footballing knowledge on his CV having played multiple times in the Premier League as well as the Sky Bet Championship. A career which began in 2003 as a trainee at Southampton, Mills has racked up over 400 senior appearances in professional football, bringing a vast amount of experience to Paul Heckingbottom’s defensive areas.
His height, power and knowledge of the game has allowed Mills to become a regular threat in attacking areas as well. The defender can boast nearly 30 goals to his name, making him a huge threat to the opposition in aerial duals at both ends of the pitch.
Throughout his career, Mills has shown his leadership skills both on and off the pitch by being awarded the captaincy on multiple occasions with former clubs. This has prompted to the Reds to go out and secure the signing of a player who will bring a different perspective and knowledge of the game to the youngest squad in the English Football League.
Could be new club captain
Must be captain it's a no brainer
Decent signing. Experienced at this level which is key. He'll hopefully marshal our defence and cut out these costly mistakes
Decent signing i cant wait to see him made club captain and partnering Lindsau in the heart of defence. Some partnerships forming on the horizon.
Short term deal so got to prove himself to get another year . Every single comment I’ve seen from Forest fans is that they’re glad he’s gone , absolutely rubbish .
Hopefully proves them wrong but I’d rather he was only on the bench , I like our current central defenders
Agree and you can't wax lyrical about having reinforcements to have em' picking up splinters in their ar5es.
Given that our new owners do not intend to spend any of their £8000,000,000 on raising our player budget to the next level and we had only the bank balance to play with I am relatively pleased with what we have done in this window
Attack-- We have brought in two strikers- a big lad and a smaller faster one. Both seem to be grafters but we need to give 'em ten games (and time is precious) to make a judgement. Only two out of the four will laik at once of course and it will be interesting to see what combinations of Moore/McBurnie/Bradshaw/Thiam develop. It probably explains why Mamma was trying to leg it yisterdi. Mahoney is only 20 and ent scooared a goal at professional level so probably a development prospect. Wiv got Isgrove (5 games a year) Hammill and Hedges out wide. I would have loved to evved Barnes back.
Midfield-- Knasmullner an unknown in England and at this level, we'll sooin find art. With Gardener and Williams doing the defensive part and Mallan the creative we could ev a nice balance.
Defence--With got our four Centre Backs-Lindsay, Pinnock, Jackson and Pearson-- to fit in with the new lad Mills, CB pairings are all abart developing partnerships so I hope thuz not too much switching abart. Not made mi mind up yit abart Mills--got the experience and could be another Darren Moore and become captain but sum dun't rate him. We'll sooin see who is reyt.
At full back a ed Yiadom darn fo gooin. Could be a bonus if he gets iz eead darn and plays to his potential. Pinillos av only seen forra bit so can't judge but he is experienced. Cavare has technical ability but his positioning/mindset do worry me.
Keeper-- Cud regret not gerrin anybody in. I hope Davies regains his confidence. We ent gor enuff games left to absorb many mooar errors. Can keepers be still brought in on loan ?
We cudda dodged a bullet wi the two French lads. Not convinced by Goathair's role in that. At least Hecky got one in that he ed chosen and wanted in McBurnie.
