    OT - Memories of 1981

Ok lads we've all got memories of that great year havent we, and I know Rotherham fans also think the same, but what a superb year 1981 was for us eh.

Boro away in cup, beating Sheff utd at home, Ian Evans winner, Ronnie Glavin at his peak, Aylott, Parker, Banks, Mccarthy, Joyce, what a team! The tension when we beat Rotherham at Oakwell that got us promotion in front of over 20,000!

My first year of watching the team as well, and it made it all the more easier as we won promotion and Oakwell was a fortress in those days. And like you say, what a team eh!.

Only 3 things mattered in 1981 to the 19 year old animal .

    BFC .

Getting my leg over , points one and three contributed greatly to that not happening often .

Drinking enormous amounts of alcohol but still managing to get up for work , my old man wouldn't have it and a sick day and beer badly wasn't on the table as an option .

Looking at the video it seemed a very angry time , early Thatcher and the country on it's @ss .

Thankfully it all turned out well and we enjoy such less traumatic times today !!!!

I confess I ran onto the pitch after the last game of the season against Newport!. Rotherham had won the title but the game against them earlier on that week was memorable. Even better apparently than when we did it to Grimsby and won promotion a few years before.

The 1979 Grimsby game was one of the classic nights .

We'd already won promotion on the saturday at Portsmouth and Grimsby were also already promoted .

What followed were two teams and two sets of fans who didn't particularly like one another .

John Saunders headed us in front in the second half , Mike Lester equalised for the cod heads before Derek Bell slotted home a winner with a few minutes to go .

Over 21k inside Oakwell that night .

Football can't get near those days today , best times of my life .

Thats why we have to enjoy them when they happen. And it might sound odd but supporting a club who dont often do that sort of thing, it makes it all the more enjoyable when it does eventually happen.
What was the reason behind the rivalry with the Grimsby fans then, at that time ?. I got sick of the sight of them in the 80s & 90s and they played a part in sending us down of course in 2001-02. And I was disappointed when Daz Barnard left us for them, he hardly bettered himself did he by joining the pesky stinky Mariners.

We took a huge following to Blundell Park a month before , at least 7k and I think they thought they were a big cheese in the 4th division , they weren't .

They won the game 2-0 and stuck it up us but we had our revenge that night .

There was never any love lost with the cod heads right up to the 90's .

Bit different today of course and you'd struggle to see a rivalry because of their demise , not playing the billy big time card just looking at their recent history .

Demise is an under statement isnt it lol. I went to Blunder Park once in Aug 92 for a Lg Cup 1st leg match (we drew both games 1-1 and they won on pens at our place), it was freezing and we couldnt wait to get in and get straight out of the place.
Its bad enough when we get the 'teams like Barnsley' thing from these bigger teams and some of them are ex-Prem teams of course. But when its 'teams like Grimsby' who think they can lord it over us, well thats another matter.
