PL - Table after final fixtures of 13/5/18.

Please check (and, errr, let me know, like!) for errors and omissions. Remember, as both a twenty year bond holding Leeds fan and a New England Patriots season ticket holder, I'm barely human and the stresses and strains of both literally and figuratively using my cranium to enter your incredibly well-considered scores isn't always as accurate as it might be. Oh, and it hurts too.

    Table is in format:- poster/previous total/weekly score/new total/status.

The final round of fixtures (the PL Dash) is discussed more in a separate thread, but here we wrap up the PL league for the 2017/18 season.

The PL has been running for at least ten years (probably nearer fif****?), having been started by MightyLeeds on LeedsMad back in the days when Leeds were still, well, a little bit mighty.

With minor tweaks, the aim has always been for everyone to keep on their proverbial football toes through the prediction of scorelines covering every team in the top four English leagues both at home and on their travels, together with the odd sprinkling of FA Cup and international fixtures.

This season, some posters were more proactive in their weekly predictions than others, but points are points, however you manage to get hold of them.

It has mostly been a three-way battle for the top spot, with Hgatenasty and Orgoner sparring early on, before Silentman slowly, but surely, reeled them in before taking the lead at the end of March.

However, it did go right down to the wire: Hgatenasty's default 2-0 home win predictions had served him extremely well up until the final weekend, when he decided to go "old school" and make considered predictions.

This turned out to be a tactical mistake as Nasty would've picked up twenty-one points instead of the eigh**** his "real" predictions actually scored: enough to catch Silentman in the league and stay in the hunt for at least a mention in the PL Dash trophy.

It wan't to be though, so last season's third placed finisher, Silentman, was able to edge 2016/17's Champion, Hgatenasty, into second by three points to claim the 2017/18 PL Championship.

    So, in conclusion......

    2017/18 PL Champion: Silentman
    2017/18 PL Runner-up: Hgatenasty
    2017/18 PL Third Place: Orgoner

Congratulations to all who successfully made it to the very end of the 2017/18 competition. No mean feat in and of itself!

Hopefully we'll see you all again next season and, if you've not quite had enough of this predicting lark, there will be a World Cup PL running once I've got my breath back.

    Enjoy the summer! 😎

Silentman - I've just shot you a pm to get your address details for the trophy.

No huge rush though - I'll probably wait until the WC competition has finished before making/sending any trophies across.

    Cheers!

This table (which doesn't include the two or three really bonkers scorelines managed this year!) shows how posters would've done by simply sticking to a fixed scoreline across every game:

    One-Nil / 273 / 21 / 294
    Two-Nil / 273 / 21 / 294
    Two-One / 258 / 18 / 276
    Three-Nil / 225 / 21 / 246
    Three-One / 225 / 21 / 246
    Three-Two / 225 / 18 / 243
    Four-One / 219 / 18 / 237
    Four-Nil / 213 / 21 / 234
    Four-Two / 216 / 18 / 234
    Four-Three / 213 / 18 / 231
    Nil-Nil / 183 / 0 / 183
    Nil-One / 162 / 18 / 180
    One-One / 180 / 0 / 180
    One-Two / 153 / 18 / 171
    One-Three / 135 / 12 / 147
    Two-Two / 147 / 0 / 147
    Two-Three / 135 / 12 / 147
    Nil-Two / 129 / 12 / 141
    Nil-Four / 129 / 12 / 141
    Nil-Three / 126 / 12 / 138
    One-Four / 126 / 12 / 138
    Two-Four / 123 / 12 / 135
    Three-Four / 123 / 12 / 135
    Three-Three / 132 / 0 / 132
    Four-Four / 129 / 0 / 129

Which, sadly, means our very best poster was equal in accuracy to either a 1-0 or a 2-0 blanket home win.

    Kids, don't bet on football........

maybe time for a rule change - no blanket predictions?

Perhaps - but I'm surprised at how well they work out given that I tend to pick local derby games (you'd think they'd tend to be draws?), big fish playing small fish away in cup competitions (mostly away wins?) and many of the fixtures are selected just so that I can cover every team at home and on their travels (all over the place).

The one "blanket rule" I do apply is that posters need to make an actual entry for the Dash competition at the end of the season - which can, obviously, still be a set of fixed scorelines.

I'm of the opinion that correct outcomes require more skill than correct scorelines as the latter often don't reflect the games involved.

I've a few months to think about it, eh?!
