In all those years the biggest thing to have happened to our club (only the oldsters will remember) was the signing of Lawton. National sporting headlines were made when the best of the world's centre forwards came to little Notts County and irrespective of his off field failings, did exactly what he was paid to do on the field. In short Tommy was a true legend who was instrumental more than anybody in creating life long memories for all fortunate enough to see him play.
Would Tom have been as successful today? No is the answer - as the game, pitches, fitness, ball and other considerations have moved on, as with all sports, levels of excellence get better.
So it is with a feeling of sadness to see our present predicament, not to apportion blame to others (although very easy to criticise) because I have never earned a living running a football club and only have opinions.
So what would be my impossible dream bearing in mind the 'impossible' Lawton signing all those years ago, that would get hope back? As I have often said to the Fatboy, perseverance and a 'It's better to try and fail than not try at all' is the way forward in life, so here goes:
Dear Neil
You got your chance in football league management with Notts County. You became our second best manager of all time and no doubt have gained enough riches to ensure security for life for which you deserve. You have achieved status as arguably the finest manager outside of the premier league where unfortunately you have not had the same success. The oldest league club in the world is in all probability about to lose that title which has been held by Notts continuously since 1862.
If we do lose our league status we believe you are the only person to revive our fortunes next year and would like you to consider re-joining us? It would not be disrespectful to say you are possibly nearing the end of your management career in the top flight but does the challenge of returning to where you started and helping the old friend who now needs your help appeal to you? We cannot offer much in salary but are prepared to give a rent free apartment, expenses and a considerable one off bonus (£1 million) if you can immediately regain us promotion from the National league. We apologise if this offer appears ridiculous and no offence is meant.
With best wishes
A Magpie (in desperation)
