Roly. I did the West Highland way last summer and did a bit of research into the blighters.
Someone has developed a special spray for Scottish midges called Smidge. You can buy it online but someone like Millets may sell it.
It did work for me and kept them at bay. I was camping as well so needed something that worked

There is a nidge graph Roly. The hotter it gets the further north they go. We spent a couple of nights in the Kelder forest! That was painful. Apparently if you don't scratch the bites they don't grow but if you can do that you're either pissed or dead!

Bit dodgy looking back .in early 60's scouts and cubs in squirrel wood.
We used to soak rags in petrol and hang them outside our tents.
    Health and safety 🤣🤣🤣

Don't wear yellow and take a Wednesday fan with you. The **** smell attracts the flies

Instead of opening your windows when it's hot keep them closed and your blinds/ curtains closed as well.

Works better to keep the house cool and also keeps the insects out.

As for when you're outside, according to a kung-fu film I saw, kung-fu masters have advanced mental control over psychic energy (qi) and can repel flies and insects, so maybe take up kung-fu and after 30 years maybe you'll be able to repel them.

There’s something called a Norwegian candle. Very effective. Lots of Scottish gardens have them in.
