    Modern Art

Do you think it is good or not? What makes a piece of scribble a masterpiece? Do you need a special gift to become a modern artist?

I took my father in law to Russells Hall on Friday and there were paintings on the corridor walls. Some were countryside and landscapes and were quite decent but one was modern art of a street map with paint thrown over it. You could buy it for £120.

How much would you pay for a modern art painting?

Saying that i think Van Goghs are overated, they look like something a child at primary school would do. No wonder he only sold one when he was alive. I think his mate bought it.

Not a penny, I occasionally see a Picasso and try to puzzle what it's supposed to be, normally not a chance.

The only Picasso I like is my car, probably the best I've ever had

I don’t like the likes of Picasso but I do appreciate its importance and the fact it was new and unique and holds a special place.

I like simple and bright art.

I have a few by an English guy called Doug Hyde who many will know,he paints the simple smiley faced characters that look a bit like an emoji.

I also have a few by another Brit calked Duncan MacGregor who uses a unique style to paint mainly sailing scenes and coastal landscapes......check him out online Des I think you’d like his stuff.

I have very cheap art as well around my house.....I’m attracted by colour and brightness more than anything.

I also like pictures taken of winter coastal scenes.

I think art is a bit like a woman ......I look at some couples together and wonder how I’d ever get a “hard on” and then you see some heffer and her stick insect husband in town with their seven kids!

It’s all down to personal taste.

Most of the art around the house my wife painted. I see nice paintings that mean something, she sees all the errors.

If you like bright and simple try this guy. Go to his gallery in Eastbourne he is very welcoming. Love his use of colour.

bought from Stephen Melrose his stuff very simple.

and our last purchase was from
http://www.tracysavage.co.uk/original-works.htm loads of detail I can look at for a long time and keep seeing different things

I'm not at all into portraits.

And love the symbolism of Guernica a bit of history that interests me

I am a fan of Salvador Dali as much for his lifestyle as his art.

What about Tracey Emin? Her of the unmade bed ‘artwork’? Utter garbage to my mind. To call that Emin ‘woman’ an artist is akin to likening me to Eric Clapton. Also, a brick wall is more attractive...........

My wife is an artist, she used to work for Worcester porcelain. After watching the work involved and the layers I can see why some modern art is appreciated. Its easy to make blanket judgements without knowledge.

I always wanted to paint but i was hopeless at it. My Art teacher at school used to say to me, just picture it in your head and then transfer it to paper. Not a chance, you are either born with the gift or you aren't. I wasn't, so i take photo's.

I like landscapes, and things of historical importance painted as the artist saw them. Some of the cottages painted by Helen Allingham are still there today.

Whenever we are in Brum we usually visit the museum and art gallery, but funnily enough worked in Wolverhampton for over three decades and never set foot in their's. I will have to visit it.

I visited Bilston art gallery when we were over the road at the art school around 1971. In there was a large painting of Cows grazing on the slopes of Sedgley Beacon when it was all farmland. The area was built on by 1957 and we lived there for almost 20 years.
I have been in that art gallery since a couple of times but never saw that painting again.
Likewise my local pub was rebuilt from a much older pub in 1931, and is typical 1930's style in build, think of the buildings in Dudley Zoo.
Over the bar in the 1980's was a painting of the pub not long after it had opened, still looking like it does now, but the car park had Bonny and Clyde style cars on it.
That painting disappeared and i have asked the last few landlords about it but they never saw it. Someone took it. I think that is a shame and selfish, things such as that should be shared by everyone.

Same goes for photography. I'm a keen photogapher and have been watching SKY Master of Photography and listened to a lot of clap trap from the "experts" Always trying to read something into an image that isn't there. Unfortuately we get that with a lot oc Camera Club Competitions. Different Judges have different opinions (usually all wrong lol )

If only someone had said, " Yes, young Adolf, your paintings are excellent."
Think of all the trouble and grief that would have been saved.
