    Cray Wanderers

Cray Wanderers lost their FA Cup 3rd qualifying round game yesterday. If they had won, there would have been a chance that they would have been drawn against Notts in the 4th qualifying round.

The relevance of this, is that it would have been the first time Notts would have played a competitive fixture against a team who is older than them.

I imagine this is the closest, it has come to happening.

If there was a quiz question, "Have Notts County ever played a competitive game against a club older than them?", I'd say yes because I'd assume that we met an older club (who are now defunct) in the early of the FA Cup, but I don't know for sure.

You bring up a good point and hopefully someone on here will know for sure?

But it certainly hasn’t happened for a long time (if ever) in a competitive fixture.

We played Sheffield, founded in 1857, in the FA Cup in 1877.

Coincidentally, Ilkeston beat Sheffield 3-2 yesterday, coming from 2-0 down with 22 minutes to play.

We played Sheffield a few times in the FA Cup in the nine****th century, but it certainly would have been the first time in a very long time. Just thinking of the surviving clubs that are older than we are - Sheffield (1857), Hallam (1860, although I think I'm right in saying they went a significant period without fielding a team), Cray Wanderers (1860) and Worksop Town (1861, although I believe that claim is at least open to question) are the ones I can think of. Anymore?

We entered the FA Cup competition for the first time in 1877, so that game against Sheffield would have been our first competitive match, eleven years before the Football League was born.

I remember that Ronnie and Reggie formed a deadly combination up front.

At least they offered the midfield protection.
