    Where's Jim ?

What's happened to him, where's he gone ? When I was growing up I had a cousin Jim and an uncle Jim, my best friend was called Jim, Jimmy Robson, Jimmy Mac and Jimmy Adamson played for Burnley, Jimmy Greaves was scoring goals for fun, Jim Reeves records were always hits, Jim Morrison was heading for an early grave, Jimmy Connors won Wimbledon, Sunny Jim Callaghan was Prime Minister, Jimmy Carter was President of the USA, Jim Bowen was an hilarious comedian, and Jimmy Hill was fronting MOTD. There was an occasional James around, but they were mostly exotic creatures like James Bond, James Dean and James Stewart, but Jims and Jimmys were everywhere.

But not now, the Jims have virtually all gone, there are one or two clinging on, Jimmy Anderson, Jimmy Carr, but they're not just on the Red List, they're virtually extinct, gone, disappeared. My niece has just married a James, my son's best friend is called James, we have James Tarkowski, James Milner plays for Liverpool, there's James Chester at Villa, James Ward-Prowse at Southampton, Palace have four James on their books, there are a few Jamies as well, but of Jim or Jimmy, not a trace, all gone. I've checked D2 to see if they're surviving at a lower level, but no, 24 clubs and not a Jim or Jimmy in sight, none there either.

Where's he gone, what's happened to Jim ? Why has James obliterated him ? I always thought Jim was an honest, down to earth name, if you chose to call your son James and insisted on James, well maybe you had too high an opinion of yourself, maybe you were a bit above your station, a bit 'posh', a bit pretentious, maybe you thought a James was a bit better than a Jim.

Is that the answer, have younger generations become more self regarding, more pretentious ? I couldn't possibly comment.

sinkov--- they are all up here! Three of my friends are called Jimmy and one Jim ---the problem is that the youngest is 72 and the oldest 80 and I don't know of any younger versions in the neighbourhood.
I agree with BT about your last sentence though!
