Whenever you refer back to the West Ham trio who did so much to enable England to be successful in 1966, it was always Moore . Hurst ,then Peters. Martin Peters was always left in the background, yet his contribution to that team and his club teams should never be under estimated ,or indeed forgotten. He was always content to take a back seat in favour of the more we’ll known players alongside him, but his contribution was equally important.
He had the uncanny knack of being in the right place at the right time and quite often would ghost into the penalty area to score a ***** goal. A quality that was lacking in many other footballers.
He was a ***** part of Sir Alf’s 4-4-2 system which proved so successful , but was never at the front of the queue when the compliments were being dished out. I was fortunate enough to see him in action more than once for both club and country, and I had forgotten he was the first £200,000 footballer. Today he would be priceless, just like so many others during that era.
The game of football will be worse off for his passing. A footballer of the highest quality , and a true gentleman to go with it.
