When I signed up last month to watch Notts on BT sport I thought that there would be the added bonus of watching some of the Champion Leage and Europa games. I was really looking forward to seeing last night’s game but assumed it would be a close one, possibly, with plenty of goals but, certainly, some superb football. However I thought watching Notts v Harrogate was excruciating enough but can’t imagine what it was like being a Barca fan. The commentary team kept telling us when Barca had last conceded 5, then 6 & 7 goals and who they were playing. Never once mentioning that Notts had put 10 past them albeit in a game played over a 100 years ago. Man City v Lyon is on tonight and I will be watching.
Yep really sympathise with those poor Barcelona fans! My old man is from Madrid and hates Barca, and even though he”s in his 80s now he rang me from Spain after the game last night because he couldn’t contain his delight and we spent a good hour doing nothing but talking football which miffed the missus a bit as we were in the middle of watching a film, but priorities eh.
That was a brilliant read man, glad to know your old man is still a football nut even in his 80's![]()
As for the game itself... It was simply amazing to watch Bayern rip Barca apart... at one stage i saw Suarez rolling around on the ground holding his head for no reason and then just gets up realizing his team is 6-2 down
.. got a good laugh out of that if I'm honest![]()
Man City 1 Lyon 3
I thought that Pep seemed to worry too much about the opposition and changed City’s usual formation and style of play. This slightly negative approach (sound familiar!) seemed to rub off on his players who were off colour for a large part of the game. Nevertheless once City equalised I thought that they would kick on and win but then VAR entered the fray (sound familiar!). Don’t think there was any offside but Dembele who scored accidentally tripped the defender who was covering him so I think the goal should not have stood. There was still time for the miss of the season from Sterling, who had bucked the City trend and looked quite sprightly throughout the game, immediately followed by an uncharacteristic error from Ederson allowing Dembele to complete the scoring.
Whilst I am sure that Bayern will respect Lyon I don’t think they will let this affect their attacking game and should have too much for their French opponents in the second semi. Hard to see any other name, but Bayern’s, on this season’s trophy.
Sterling is really not a good finisher and misses loads of sitters, it's just that he plays for a team where he gets chance after chance so it's not as noticable. Hopefully now he's missed such a high-profile one it'll reduce the hype around him.
I was very impressed with Lyon - strong in the tackle, mentally sharp, hungry, and with an effective game plan. Not what I expected from them at all especially given that Rudi Garcia's teams tend to be a bit on the flaky side. Their back three were immense but even their forwards were tracking back to their own byline. Fully deserved victory IMO.
He also scores goals that most can’t due to his pace. Missing opportunities is part and parcel of football. Given he is a winger, scoring the best part of 30 goals in a season puts him amongst the better players in the world. It’s not hype that any club in the world would have him.
It’s so typically English for good players to be put on a pedestal and then every opportunity we get we try and smash them off it.
People need to accept Sterling is a fine footballer with many positive attributes. Is he a clinical finisher? No. That doesn’t define him though.
