Spending big money means nothing as we've proved! Managers especially here who have pissed big money up the wall is incredible. The only two Derby managers in recent years who got players at bargain prices where Jim & Nigel and even they made a few mistakes!

Talking about spending big...I see Lampard is hitting the heights. About £135m already this window with talk of him hitting the £200m mark.

Hope MoP is right and ‘spending big money means nothing’. As he proved with us Lampard really isn’t that special. Cocu’s record was virtually identical in our season from hell and I’d like to think there’s more to winning things than just buying them.
The amount Lampard has been given to spend really does seem obscene and one hell of a risk just now.

DCFCA posted the start of this thread in January 2020 - therefore I think we can safely ignore it as regards spending "this summer". He would appear to be referencing spending prior to the 19-20 season???

    And he's an imbecile

Yeah like a play off final in his first season and finishing 5th with 74 pts is "virtually identical" to 10th and 64 points, which was Derby's worst league performance since the 2012–13 season, when they also finished 10th but achieved just 61 points.

Remind me what you used to teach rA - not comparative techniques obviously!

Yep...can’t really argue with that. I think they were identical with a few games to go and then we fell away...but Cocu didn’t have the privilege of a pre season, wasn’t empowered to bring in three Premiership quality players, did have the season from hell and still wasn’t responsible for wasting £3m plus on Josefzoon and Malone.

Fair cop! Lampard did manage to finish 4th with a Chelsea team that had a transfer embargo, so I'd say a play off final in your first season as manager and 4th in premier league in your second season is not too shabby for the first two years of ones managerial career.

So Cocu has it all to do this season! I being typically negative don't see us getting in the top 6 but hey we shall see!

Refreshing that two people with a different take on the two managers can see and respect each other’s point of view.

I think Lampard’s win ration is around 4% better than Cocu’s, but last season really was unprecedented in the number of things that went seriously wrong off the pitch and unfortunately the unfounded EFL allegations have undoubtedly impacted on our preparations for this season.

I do think that in terms of uncomplaining loyalty Cocu is streets ahead of mardy Frank and I’d love to see that rewarded.

Suspect no one can really predict what this season holds until the squad jigsaw is complete. Two or three of the right additions will make a massive difference but it might take longer than usual this season.

Let’s not forget how Jim Smith’s first season started, and then it all changed dramatically with a certain October time signing. Oh for one, or two, of those.
