Helped out in the end by a woeful penalty decision given against the Iceland defender making the block. All compounded by giving him a second yellow.
The modern game is getting worse by the day at the top level particularly. Thank goodness that the game I watched at Ashington was far better than the dross served up by England.
I love Tripper, everyone on here knows that, but if Taylor is not a better left back than Trippier I will join sinkov in Burtons' window.
There are several players in that squad which are not at international level. Based on last season and his club managers comments Pickford should not have made the squad let alone being first choice.
Dier by name and dire by nature nothing more to be said. Perhaps Tarkowski, needs to jump into the stand and threaten a supporter to gain Southgate’s support.
Tarks needs to get a move to a club that takes 30 passes to get the ball from the keeper to within 10 yards of the halfway line before passing it back to the keeper to start it all again ad nauseam.
Modern football at its best with plenty of passing, no tackling, not endangering any opponents, no shots on target ----isn't it great?
One of the most alarming aspects of his team selection was playing Trippier at left-back. I pointed out there was no left-back in the squad just after it was published, and Sub made the logical suggestion that it was because he intended to play three at the back, in the event he didn't, he played a back four with Trippier on the wrong side. I haven't seen the game but a couple of journos have said this contributed to the woeful performance, we were disjointed on the left and there was no threat down that side at all.
There is an established Premier League left back called Charlie Taylor, he plays in one of the best organised back fours in the PL, he's played in Europe, he's played for England U19s. This was a game against Iceland, Taylor plays against far better players than anyone Iceland could put out against him on a weekly basis, and acquits himself well, I'm sure he would have got through the game without breaking sweat.
I don't really see the sense in playing Trippier out of position, what did he learn from that, would it not have made more sense to have a look at Taylor instead ?
sinkov-- I totally agree. We were very poor and very lucky to get the win. The media was raving about Rice this morning but I thought that he was poor as well. PLaying Trippier out of position was crazy and bring back memories of managers all trying to accommodate Lampard, Gerrard, Scholes etc. ---it does not work!
