    Penalties

Is it my imagination or has this season seen a big increase in the number of penalties awarded? Every match seems to have at least one. What bothers me about this is that many of them are really soft, players are looking for any opportunity to go to ground, the slightest touch prompts a dive. VAR it seems, is moving us ever closer to a non contact game. I’m sure that I am watch a different game to that I first saw at the Hawthorns back in the early sixties. Not for the better, either.

There seems to be 1 in every game. Have we had one yet?

I don't necessarily blame the players as I'm sure that the coaches have told them to do this.

Done some research on this one.

Since 1992/3 season there have been only 5 occasions when more than 100 penalties were awarded over the course of the full season. The highest was 106 penalties in both the 2009/10 and 2016/7 seasons and next 105 in season 2006/7.

As of today 35 penalties have already been awarded this season after most sides have played 7 matches each. If we carry on at this rate there will be over 180 penalties awarded this season which shows how much the change has been so far this season. Will it continue? Goodness only knows but you are right there have been far more than usual so far this season.

Interesting stats, it’s not just down to VAR either, although that has caused more to be awarded, there seem to be many more penalties given in the EFL too. As I said earlier, some of them are so soft; just imagine the number of penalties that would have been given had today’s rulings been applied back in the 60’s and 70’s.
