    Obstruction ?

Can any qualified Refs out there explain the obstruction offence ?
Quite a few times today I've seen players run into others where the the "offender" has had absolutely nowhere to go (apart from vanishing into thin air !) Is it by default that if you don't (cant) get out of the way, you are at fault ?

Personally I've not seen an indirect free kick for ages for obstruction even though its still part of the FA rules. But shielding the ball is perfectly legitimate so I think refs are using this interpretation instead, when clearly it shouldn't be.
