Milton Keynes Dons manager Russell Martin has confirmed that loan player Carlton Morris is back with Norwich City, in talks about a transfer to a Championship club.
The forward has been heavily linked with a move to Barnsley in recent weeks, and it appears this has moved a step forward.
The 25-year-old has spent the first half of the season on loan at MK Dons, but was absent from their home win over Bristol Rovers in League One yesterday.
Speaking after the match, their boss Martin revealed that Morris was in talks with a second-tier side over a permanent transfer.
“Carlton is in talks about a permanent move to a Championship club,” he told the media, as reported by MK Citizen.
“Norwich have been really transparent and open about it. And credit to him, he was willing to play today but it’s a tough one – I know what’s at stake for him and his career.
“Especially in the last few weeks, he has been outstanding, so it is no surprise to me that clubs are interested in him, even if he hasn’t got the goals he would have liked.”
Morris has never quite managed to force his way into the first team at Norwich, the club he has played at since the age of 11.
He has made just one senior appearance, in March 2015, instead seeing his career become a series of loans at various levels of the game.
After initial spells at Oxford United and York City in League Two, he spent a season with Scottish Premiership side Hamilton Academical.
After an injury-hit spell in the Championship with Rotherham United saw him make only eight appearances, Morris has since spent his time in League One with Shrewsbury, Rotherham and two spells at MK Dons.
The second of those loans appears to be coming to an end, along with his time at Norwich as a whole.
Morris will be a free agent at the end of the season, hence the Canaries’ desire to bag whatever fee they can in the January window.
Barnsley have shown interest in the player and, for a cut-price fee, could bring him in to bolster their attacking options.
The Reds are enjoying a very successful campaign under Valerien Ismael, moving up to 10th in the table with a dramatic 2-1 win over Huddersfield Town on Boxing Day.

Recruitment teams done decent overall. If he signs we will definitely be needing that summat extra up front.
Seems to fall in to the category of " can do a job for us " and possibly won't cost us the earth .
Seems to have had a few injuries which have disrupted his progress .
He's an addition to the squad if this goes through rather than a signing we desperately need so to speak .
We dunt really know that though till we see him laik a few games. A get what tha sayin but think back to when Callum Brittain signed. Wid nivver heard o him either and he came in for some unnecessary criticism from some fans merely because he was a lower league player. He's turning art to be a very good laiker at championship level though.
We not gonna unearth a gem though every signing we make but least we can do is give um a chance.
If he comes in and gives us a different dimension up front it duz a job as tha sez. Then again, he may be the next Ashley Ward. Who knows?
Yep - evidence shows that the club tends to know who to sign.
And after watching YouTube clips of Morris then I think he definitely would add something different.
A positive signing if we can get him.
He ain’t the tallest of centre forwards - but he’s got quick feet - has wide shoulders and strong upper body strength - all of which enables him to hold the ball up and bring other players in.
Strikers such as Woodrow, Chaplin, Victor and Schmidt would benefit greatly from a player like Morris.
And importantly he would also allow our midfielders such as Styles to get forward more often.
Merse on Soccer Saturday was talking about Emille Heskey yesterday and said that every player who played up top with him said he was the best strike partner they ever played with .
Worked his nakers off , ran the channels and did the hard dirty yards .
The fans pointed to his lack of goals and didn't appreciate what he brought to the table from a team point of view .
Reminded me of Paul Wilkinson , big gangly awkward bugga , not the greatest footballer we've ever had by any means but he did a reight job up there alongside Super John in 97 .
We wouldn't have got promoted without him .
We had Carlton Morris on loan twice from Norwich.
First time was towards the end of the season and he was just recovering from a hamstring injury at Norwich so we didn't see the best of him.
Second time was the following season. He won't score you 20 goals a season although I reckon there's a decent player in there.
He works hard, puts himself about, good at holding the ball up and bringing other players into play.
The goals he did score for us were decent efforts.
Maybe he hasn't yet found the right club at the right time.
