    Going On School Arranged Holidays.

Following on from the other holiday thread.

I went away whilst aged 9 with my junior school year to London.

There were around 6 of us in one room and I remember we were running around the corridors until around 3.30am in the morning and totally unsupervised.

Someone was flicking Maltesers around the room and when one of the lads woke the following morning he’d slept on one and it looked like he’d s h I t himself 🤣

I remember going to The Tower of London and Madame Tussaud’s.

The three day holiday cost £7.

Then at 11 I went to Weymouth for a week with the school.

Me and a couple of others got marched back to the hotel by the arcade owner because the alarm went off when we were shaking the penny falls machine 😏🤭

The headmaster wasn’t a happy boy!

A week in Weymouth cost £13.50 and I had a savings card which the school handed out and I took in 50p a week for 27 weeks to pay for it.........money was tight in those days and it made you appreciate things a lot more.

Then at 15 we went on a holiday to Llandudno and this was more about trying to sneak into the girls bedrooms than anything else.

On our ex pupils Facebook page people have been posting loads of pictures of that holiday and of our school leaving year of 78.

It was the first time I’d seen these pictures so it was strange to have all of those awkward t e e n age feelings come flooding back.

I never went abroad with the school because my parents couldn’t afford it but the school went on some really good trips.

    I wonder how many of the teachers were p a e d o s ? 😲👀

I don’t remember going on any school holidays in the UK, although we had many one day outings. I went on a school trip to Paris during my last year at boarding school, I recall getting very drunk on cheap wine. I also went on a skiing holiday with a Halesowen Grammar School trip to Mayrhofen in Austria, lots of fun that was.

Never been on an arranged holiday but in the sixth form I went on two field courses. The first one was to Somerset where we stayed at Cheddar. One night we decided to go to the pub (we were 17). All the locals drank cider so we decided to try it. I thought it tasted like vinegar but still proceeded to get pi55ed. I woke up in the middle of the night. Not knowing what I was doing I picked up my Chelsea boot and had a long pi55 into it. My head cleared a little and I realised what I had done. I took the full boot and crept out of the room and walked down the silent corridor to the bog. I remember all these portrait paintings of very stern looking people staring at me as I went by. Needless to say it was still very damp the next morning. I was too embarrassed to ever tell anyone. Happy days!

I remember a primary school trip to Jodrell Bank which inspired me to take astronomy as a serious hobby. Then there was a day trip to my one and only visit to Wembley to watch a school boy international. At the Grammar School there were some great educational holidays such as a European cruise on the SS Uganda but parents hadn't the money to allow me to go.

Yes I went on the SS Uganda trip in March 1967, some of the best times in my life, even though as usual West Brom tried to ruin it for us.

We managed to get the Wembley half time result from the crew (pre mobile phones) and of course we were celebrating being 2-0 against QPR in the final at Wembley. Next we heard we had lost so back down to earth with a solid bump.

Most of us sea sick for the first few days but at least it got us out of some of the onboard classes. Remember us doing very well in the deck hockey which was great fun!

Selected for the Islands Schoolboys squad and went on a tour of..................the West Midlands. I remember staying with a really nice family on a large housing estate and the dad used to take me to the pub. I’d never been to a pub before and they bought me beer! I went back most nights a little worse for wear. I recall attending, I think it was Holly Hall School, in or very close to Dudley. Things I recall from that trip was playing in a force 8 gale with hailstones that hurt like hell. I also recal that we had to go and watch Wolves v Sheff Utd which ended up 1 apiece and then we also did a tour of ughhh, Villa Park. I remember being on the coach as we drove past the Hawthorns, it was a painful trip in so many ways.

To top it all I did not make the 11 for the final I was an unused sub. Still I was only 13 at the time and nearly all the boys were 15/16 so I found it difficult to fit in really.

Went on a cubs trip a 9/10 to Jersey. First time in a airplane (Vickers Viscout) I was home sick after two days.

I remember going to see an England schoolboys international with the school in May 72 when I was around 10-11.

We beat West Germany 4-0 and two of the goals were scored by a very highly rated lad at the time called Peter Stronach who only played 37 games in the league for Sunderland and York City.

He was the best player on the pitch by a mile yet I’ve just Googled the match and Butch Wilkins played😲

These games were a big deal in those days, I seem to remember a 40,000+ crowd although I may well be wrong on that.

I went on a school holiday to Germany when I was 15. Most memorable moment? The female teacher (can't remember her name) was tall, skinny and very ***y. We had a day at a swimming pool and she wore a tiny red bikini. The word soon spread around all the boys. The most exciting vision imaginable for an adolescent youth. There was just one solitary p ubic hair visible below the bikini.

Has there ever been more activity inspired by 1 stray hair in a boy's dorm as there was that night?
