Be mad if we let smudge go this season

If we are hunting for promotion (which we should be)

It makes no financial or football sense to sell In the January window.

With 6 months left on his contract the fee will be nominal and he is worth much more to the club playing and scoring us to promotion.

Unless Smith refuses to play for the club it just makes no sense at all .

What if we keep him. He plays. He scored. We don't by win promotion?

Btw, only devils advocate, I'd keep him.

Promotion is worth around £7m so even £1m transfer fee inJanuary isn’t worth it. If he goes next summer he should get a better deal for himself.

Looking at the Smith situation, no Millers fan wants Smith to leave the club, but Smith will be looking
to give himself & his family a better financial standing, be it with bigger wages at another club, for
    2 to 3 years.
Perhaps his family are settled, with the children's schooling etc, Smith would hope to be able to still
live in the same area, & travel to his new club.

We have seen Middlesbrough are not pulling many trees up [only Crooks] in the championship, with
Neil Warnock probably kicking himself for not coming in for Smith, to add to the Crooks signing.
    Cardiff City are struggling also.

Okay Smith has only six months left on his contract when the January window comes along, been said
in a posting, we won't get a lot of money for Smith, but if Rotherham decide they want promotion at
all costs, they could let Smith rundown his contract, which could mean such clubs as Middlesbrough
would have to pay more money, if they want to have a better promotion chance, by buying Smith in
the January transfer window, or any other club in the championship.

I don't think he's the type of player to get the mug on or force a move like Deon Burton did to us. He's not like that

Plus it's in his interests to carry on his good form with us until May so he either gets a better deal with us or more likely to put himself in the shop window for a move to another club
Also if he lets his contract run down then he can negotiate a better salary as his new employers won't have the burden of shelling out a transfer fee

Agree with the above. I feel like he is comfortable with the situation, will do his best this season, score as many as he can, hopefully get promoted, and then see what interest there is. Test the market then as a free agent potentially. I wouldn't sell for the financial reasons mentioned, obviously taking a chance we keep him and don't go up, calculated risk.

Paul Warne says he is irreplaceable in our squad so, on that basis he should be paid accordingly.
If we do go up it may be that he gets offered a contract that makes him happy to stay. He has said he wouldn't be averse to that because his family is settled where they are.

Paid accordingly means matching wages from top clubs and Stewart will not bust the wage structure for any of our players.

Smith has seen Crooks go and probably double if not triple his wage he was on with us, and Smith must think he’s worth that much himself and rightfully so. Smith his now at the wrong end of his 20’s so probably sees another 2-3 year deal as his last hurrah. Shame we can’t pay those kind of wages as Smith is good for us at our level and he wouldn’t be out of place in a Championship side.

If he sees the season out and we don’t go up so he walks on a free then so be it. I’m sure we are bound to see more goals from him if only for the entertainment value.
