    Frustrated Cole

DEVANTE Cole says it has been ‘very frustrating’ to have limited gametime under Markus Schopp, who the striker says has offered little reasoning for leaving him mainly on the bench or out of the matchday squad.

The 26-year-old, who joined on a three-year deal in the summer, has started just one of Barnsley’s 14 Championship games this season, coming off the bench in four others.

He scored in the 3-2 home defeat to Sheffield United on Sunday, his first goal for the club since a 2014 loan spell.

Cole told the Chronicle: “It’s my aim to score goals in the little time I have to play in. I am just trying to show what I can do so I get more minutes.

“It’s been very frustrating for me, but it’s football and it can happen.

“I can only work hard in training and see what happens.

“The manager hasn’t really told me why I haven’t played much.”

The loss to the Blades was a sixth in a row for a side who are winless in 12 and second-bottom in the Championship.

Cole said: “It’s not ideal and not what we want but we have to stick together and show what we can do. I am confident that, as a group, we can get ourselves out of this situation.”

Barnsley fans booed Schopp off the pitch on Sunday after a series of negative chants. Cole said: “The fans have to understand we don’t want to be in this position and we are trying hard to change it for them.

“The players know the fans are with us. They can voice their discontent but we have to just focus on our job.”

Cole and fellow substitute Aaron Leya Iseka both scored as the Reds fought back from 3-0 down. He said: “As a striker you live and die by your goals, so that will give us a lot of confidence.”

Cole appeared to criticise Schopp when he said: “After the third goal, we said ‘come on we need to show something here’. That’s come from the group on the pitch. That was just the boys rallying together.”

    It's frustrating watching this shyte.

The fans know the players are far better than this but this coach has successfully turned what should be a mid table team into a side that is propping up the division.
There's not much positive at all to draw on. 1 win in 15 games and we're getting worse. Under this head coach we currently have a 7.5% chance of winning a football match. To survive in the championship you generally need around a 30% win ratio. Last season under Ismael we had a 54% chance of winning a match. Kind of puts this into perspective

Even in the Stendel/Struber season we had a terrible start but the commitment and effort was always there. We just lacked the nous because the vast majority of the squad had no championship experience.

With respect the thread is about what Cole said & I personally think he has been dealt a bum hand by Schopp , he leaves him out of the side for the best part of 2 months without so much as 10 minutes off the bench & then puts him in against Millwall from the start , it was as if he had hung him out to dry , with no minutes on the pitch to develop any match fitness it was as if Schopp expected him to struggle thus justifying his omission from the side , however Cole performed quite well that day & probably expected further opportunities but Schopp then drops him from the squad , eventually he gets a belated chance against the Blades & shows he can do a job , to sum up I think Cole is right to call out the treatment he has received .

Coles record in the last three years at Wigan, Burton, Doncaster and Motherwell, leaving as a free agent, does not really give him the high ground to be claiming a regular place in the Championship.

I'm old school in the sense of thinking going public with gripes against the coach never ends well. It's another symptom of the present unrest inside Grove Street.

    I blame Conway (for everything)

I agree with you but his record at Motherwell last year was decent, however one of the reasons i think he should have had more of a chance is simply his goal record & experience is far in front of a wing back/midfield player in the shape of Odour with one league goal in his career who has arguably had many more outings in a role which Cole plays & to be honest that beggers belief , incidentally I also agree with you about Mr Conway .

Yes he hit a purple patch at Motherwell with 11 goals in 27 games. It does make me wonder why Motherwell didn't renew his contract in the summer. He came to us aged 26 outside the usual recruitment rules so, apart from being free, someone at the club saw something worth taking a punt on.
The world is now his lobster at Grove Street and I hope he is a game changer this season
