The Times - Grimsby at Notts

Article about the rise of violence and drugs at football in The Times today, centred around Grimsby and Leicester visiting Nottingham this weekend - LINK - no paywall for this one.

Includes quite a lot of video footage from ML.

They did a feature about this on talkSport this morning, he mentioned people in their 50s and 60s being involved with some of the organised violence. The increase across Europe will be a reflection of rising tensions and frustrations in wider society, but alchohol and drugs will play a huge part. Never understood why people feel they have to be 'out of it' to enjoy a football match.

Grimsby have always had a large vermin element.
Police must love the Grimsby Lincoln games - when they met.
Probably the worst bunch of cavemen in the NL, more so than Wrexham.

We walked past the Sirrel stand on Saturday and I don’t think there was an away fan that wasn’t intoxicated with drink and/or drugs. We also witnessed fans being let in the ‘emergency exits’.

I can certainly see how people in places as neglected as Grimsby/Cleethorpes have been over the last 12 years would see how a day out in Notts would be decent. Especially with drink and drugs involved.

Not sure if the violence is on the up, but drinking and fighting at football is hardly a new phenomenon and I'd say the cocaine element has been significant for at least 20 years too.

Being out of it would have got me through the Steve Thompson tenure nicely.
