    Full moon

Driving home from my night shift it seems considerably lighter at 6am this morning but don't know if this is anything to do with it being a full moon last night. Presenters on the radio were going on about not being able to sleep during a full moon and must say that we always know when it's a full moon at home because all our animals get out of sorts. I understand the ducks because they are outside and it's so much brighter than normal but the dog and particularly all our cats play up whenever it's a full moon. Maybe it's because we are on the coast and something to do with the effect of the moon on the tide (I'm trying to remember my schoolboy science here&#128512. Obviously there were high winds too last night but anyone else experience similar effects during a full moon (besides turning into a werewolf of course)? And is there any science behind it?

We used to have familiar names for the Moon such as quarters, full, gibbous, waxing, waning but now there seems to be a fancy trend to give the Moon extra names that are of no relevance whatsoever. Blue, Harvest, Hunter, Wolf, Worm, There's also been Super Moon and yet its never any brighter. I think most of the brightness and size is mainly attributable to a false illusion

These new names confused me too!.I remember learning about the phases of the moon and waxing and waning and Harvest moon I'd heard of (unless that was just because of the Neil Young song !&#128580 but not wolf moon or Hunter moon. These are apparently names used in the States with possible origins in Native American cultures so don't know why we have to use them here too.

Tell you what Phil. There was no illusion to how bright the moon was one night on exercise in Germany. I was able to read a map clear as day by moonlight. Could read place names and even see contour lines.

It was surreal, so bright it was like false lighting. Got into location and read from my book by the light of the stars some time around 01:00hrs and 02:00hrs. Beautiful night and the brightest moon I can ever recall.

I believe last night was the Snow Moon. It did look special especially when Dudley's clouds were racing across it.

Our dog slept like a log. The wind unsettles him though. And bumps and bangs thanks to bonfire night which actually lasts over a month.

Many things effects the brightness. The moon does move closer at times....and if the atmosphere has had rain it can damp down many dust particles improving the seeing conditions.
I enjoy observing the moon but it didn't seem any brighter to me....but it differs from place to place.

Yep. Cities are basically too brightly lit. Wales has two of the world's eleven 'Dark Sky Reserves' in the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia National Park.

I've had the pleasure of seeing the night sky at both locations, the Scottish Highlands and Islands and the Herz Mountains in Germany amongst a host of other relatively remote spots.

Always a pleasure to get away from built up areas, false lighting and..................

    ............ people 😊 .

A rare outing for the words “special” and “Dudley” in the same sentence!
