Ian John Lewis' scorecard of 114-111 for Taylor absolutely beggared belief. I re-watched the fight this morning without the commentary to see if I'd been swayed by the commentators last night, but it was blatantly obvious that Catterall won by at least three clear rounds. Lewis should never referee or judge a world title fight again.
Literally every expert at ringside saw it for Catterall. Carl Froch suggested that he coasted the last few rounds when he shouldn't have, but has since clarified that he still had Catterall winning it.
I don't know what's worse. The idea that two experienced referees and judges could be so incompetent to score a fight so badly, or the suspicion that something else could be at play. Fighters put their lives on the line for our entertainment and they deserve competent and honest judging.
I have to say, I lost a lot of respect for Josh Taylor for trying to claim victory. If he had said diplomatically that it's impossible for the fighters involved in the fight to accurately judge the outcome I could have forgiven him, but if he genuinely thought he won then he must be delusional or still concussed.
