Died at 52 suspected heart attack
Brilliant cricketer and great showman.
Proper legend.
Just saw this pop up on my phone. Very sad news and only 52.
That is a shocker. When you first saw the Gatting ball it was like magic.
The great Rod Marsh yesterday too. The wicketkeeper for the mighty Lillee and Thomson speed demons era. Another special character of the game sadly passed. Also an honest player...
"In the 1977 Centenary Test at the MCG, Marsh told the umpires he had not caught Derek Randall after the Englishman, well over a hundred at this stage, appeared to edge Greg Chappell behind.
“What are you doing, Rodney?” Chappell said, according to Marsh as he brought back Randall - the talkative batsman, who one greeted the keeper with “ehoop Marshy, how’re going?”
“What do you think this is, Randall, a f***ing garden party,” came the reply.
For Marsh though, the decision was clear as day.
“The ball did not carry to me, I promise you, otherwise I wouldn’t have called him back obviously and, therefore, it wasn’t out,” Marsh later said during his MCC Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey Lecture in 2015.
“It was a simple decision, really, because I hadn’t caught the ball. The fact that he didn’t hit it had nothing to do with my decision.”

That's shocking and awful news. Cricket isn't my first sport but Shane Warne was my favourite cricketer - sublime talent mixed with great charisma on and off the field made him pure box office. I enjoyed his commentary too. Undoubtedly one of those big personalities who transcended his sport. You didn't need to be a cricket fan to know who Shane Warne was. What a loss, at such a young age.
RIP
Gutted and shocked to hear this news today whilst in beautiful Broadway. Very sad.
I can't imagine how any cricket fan can't like or admire him. Like our very own Flintoff just a very likeable person as well as talented on as well as off the pitch.
Really sad news. He was in a class of his own.
Just to add - the thing that put him head and shoulders above most other cricketers for me was that he was such a scholar of the game. Incredible to watch, and fascinating to listen to.
