We finished 5th and had either the 4th, 5th or 6th highest budget. This means we finished basically where our budget allowed us to.
We definitely had a lower budget than Wrexham, Stockport and Chesterfield. Then if we consider parachute payments, we quite possibly had a lower budget than Grimsby and / or Southend.
The biggest underachievers were Southend, Chesterfield (although this can be explained via injury and behind the scenes distractions) and Wrexham (although this is mainly due to their playoff performance. Finishing 2nd with the highest budget is only slightly off the mark).
The final position was in line with the budget and the league was harder last year at the top. What I keep coming back to though in my head is Barrow and Sutton winning the league. Doubt theirs was the top budget or even better than ours. Therein lies the problem, we need the right manager to get the best out the squad and make us a much tougher proposition away from home.
Sorry guys n gals
But yes we did
Did we win the league…….. no
Did we win the playoffs………no
So a big under achievement
No way should anything else of happened nor should any player or supporter accept any less
Why should you??
A big well done notts
Finished fifth and lost your playoff
Fantastic
You showed endless passion throughout the season
We’re always hard to beat and played for your shirt
If that were the case we would have another 15 point on the table and been in the efl now.
#Full stop
Just be honest and the truth be said
We were pathetic at times and it cost us the league
I think by their own definition, I think (and hope) the Reedtz brothers would say we underachieved this season.
They have always said they aim to provide a competitive budget that will never be the highest in the league but will be in the top five - let's say, for sake of argument, we had the 5th highest this season. They believe their Football Radar data is the unique extra ingredient that will then catapult us above teams who are spending more than us. I'd imagine they would have been aiming for at least third to say the system produced what they intended.
Their key methods - employ a top coach who gets the team playing in an attractive way; signing underrated/up-and-coming players who will then thrive under a top coach and help us achieve "over the odds" success - definitely proved mixed results.
While IB definitely got the team playing some terrific football at Meadow Lane and enjoyed a great home record, it was still in fits and starts and not always convincing. Too often the plan came unstuck against the high press, both at home and away, with some shocking results on the road (Torquay, Aldershot, Eastleigh, Altrincham, Halifax...), and the team never found a solution to the problem.
Recruitment was the biggest issue, though - too many lightweight or "nice" signings who were unable to compete against physical or high-energy teams. When we had to earn the right to play, it seems that too often we were incapable of doing that.
If the recruitment team learn nothing more from this season, it's that we need to be a lot better without the ball and get some never-say-die warriors in the starting XI.
In the main, I agree. I also think next season will be tougher, maybe not in terms of number of teams that compete for top spot, more in that it could take 100 points to win it. Which means we need to find around 20 points on last season to compete with Wrexham in all likelihood. The obvious area to improve is away from home. For me it’s about our style of play. At home we can be the ‘tippy tappy’ footballing side the bros want. Away from home needs to be built on resilience, solid defensive shape, a more direct approach and pace up front. I couldn’t care less if that makes us boring if we win or draw more than we did last season. The bros need to understand that for their model to work, it can’t be one dimensional. It can’t be that the players develop the passing only element of a game. Players need to develop many attributes, including behaviours - how to deal with adversity, how to deal with someone physically bigger or quicker than you, how to defend set pieces etc etc
Promotion was the stated objective by the club at the beginning of the season. As we were not promoted then any of the following apply:
1) We didn't budget enough for promotion
2) The budget we spent wasn't spent as well as anticipated for promotion
3) The style of play attempted did not produce the results required for promotion
4) The manager/coach employed did not make the best use of resources for promotion
No doubt a pile of excuses can be added to that, but the above are basic reality.
