All leagues should have a salary cap
From BBC article about NL final prices.
Salary cap changes unlikely for 2022-23
It had been thought some kind of salary cap changes might be implemented in the National League by the start of next season.
Although discussions are continuing, Ives believes alterations to the regulations are unlikely in the short term, which will be good news for big-spending Wrexham, given they missed out on promotion again and will remain in the National League for a 15th consecutive season.
"A salary cap might mean a hard cap, where everyone can spend the same amount of money irrespective of whether they have got more in the bank," Ives said.
"Or it could be a soft one, where you can spend a percentage of your accepted income towards player and team salaries. Or is it a discussion to have secure financial regulations to ensure clubs don't spend beyond their means?
All leagues should have a salary cap
I agree in principle but it just means that clubs, agents etc will be more clever in getting around the rules (e.g a bigger signing on fee) and I think there has already been legal claims against it from players and agents.
Yeah, in true national league style, they held a vote to hold a vote on it... If one comes in, it won't be this season
I believe a salary cap should exist. I can’t see how any club can justify losses, regardless of the level.
What I can’t agree with is the possibility of all clubs having the same cap. Why should clubs like Notts, Wrexham and Chesterfield have the same salary cap/budget as a Wealdstone, Kings Lynn or Dover? Those clubs would vote in favour as it would allow them to be competitive, regardless. Can you imagine if the Premier League did the same?
Like you say CBP, more shambolic NL votes for votes sake. Sooner we get out of this tin pot League the better.
Reading his comments, I would say it's 3 or 4 seasons away at least, as they haven't even got to a point where they've decided what format it would take. Not sure if it would need to go to a member vote, but each year there are more bigger clubs down here than previously, they will get less backing for it.
He's also stated, again, that he wants 3 promotion spots. Zero chance of him and his board convincing the FL to adopt that, though.
The problem is that it will be voted on by the north and south teams as well. The more big clubs in the national league will more likely steel their resolve to vote for it if they get up to level the playing field a bit.
If they're to get three up, three down, they will surely need to match the system used in league 2 for the EFL to even consider it, but as you say, the EFL won't do 3 up, 3 down as that would be like turkey's voting for Christmas
The best thing would surely be for the EFL and the NL to merge and create League 3 and League 4. Then everything can be standardised all the way down the pyramid under the same rules, structure and administration.
