    My dad never liked him as a person.
    When our keeper Norman Heath had a testimonial Matthews wanted a fee to play in it. He was told no and didn't play.
    Footballers didn't earn much in those days, and there wasn't a welfare state as such back then. Heath would have been thrown on the scrap heap at an early age.
    Around 56,000 turned up for the testimonial so Mathews not playing didn't matter to anyone other than Matthews.

    Just to add that Heath was crippled for life in the later stages of the 53-54 season when we just missed out on the double, hence the testimonial.
