What is the point of playing a wing back on the left, who will not, cannot, centre a ball with his left foot ? Grealish must be asking the same question, he can fanny about all he likes on the left wing, but it's to no avail when his wing back doesn't want to go past him into the space he's creating, or when he does, can do nothing but turn and play the ball back to the half way line.
And the excuses, from Gareth and some journos, Oliver Brown in the Telegraph, " The lack of sharpness was painful to behold, not least when Sterling ballooned over with the goal at his mercy. The exhaustion of these players, ground down by marathon domestic campaigns, was self-evident."
It's bollox, our players have no more of an exacting schedule than the rest of Europe's elite, and in some cases they have it easier. Take England's City contingent, tired out the poor dears, Foden 36 starts for City, Sterling 32, Grealish 31, Walker 31, Stones 24. If they're tired, how must Bernado Silva be feeling, 46 starts, or Rodri 45, or Laporte 43, or De Bruyne 39, or Dias 37 ? It's the foreign players doing the heavy lifting for Pep at City, not Gareth's blue-eyed boys.
Harry's knackered as well, he can hardly raise a gallop after a long hard season of 47 starts at Tottenham, but should he feel hard done by when Lewandowski started 46 times for Bayern, Benzema 45 for Real Madrid and Mbappe 42 for PSG ? if Harry is tired, then going to play for a big club abroad is hardly going to help him is it ?
Henderson 43 starts and AA, 47, had long hard seasons at Liverpool, but so did Van Dijk 51, Mane 46, and Salah 45. Elsewhere in Europe, Modric had 40 starts for Real Madrid, Busquets 49 for Barcelona, De Jong 41, Thomas Muller 44 for Bayern, Kimmich 39 and Perisic 46 for Inter. Are all these players tired out, or just ours ?
Some other England numbers, Mount 41 starts, Maguire, 35, James 31, Phillips 21, and two players who really highlight what a load of bollox this all is, Rice and Bowen look to have more energy than all the rest of the squad put together, they've had 48 and 45 starts respectively for West Ham, maybe Moyes knows how to get his players fit and keep them fit ?
Whatever, I think I know why England are ****e, and it's nothing to do with fatigue.
