Why do people do this? Climb Ben Nevis in January, go potholing in the thaw.
Group's of people have been killed looking into a Volcano and then it erupts. This has happened a few times, one quite recently.
Why would you do any of this?

Potholing, peering into volcanoes, why do people do it? They like holes.

I’ve often wondered how cool it would be to be at a major event or disaster and survive it.

As yet I’ve never even come close.

Probably just as well as the alternative is to be stuck 100 floors up at the World Trade Center or building sandcastles on a beach in Phuket with my back towards a 100 foot high wave!

Playing 'devil's advocate', it could be claimed that if all the money spent on exploring space was used to solve the problems of our own planet it would be beneficial. This may be a very insular viewpoint, and I'm not saying that it is mine, but many will claim that it does have its merits.

Sorry, this should have been on the James Webb telescope thread!
