Let’s all get behind Aro.
Okay, I will hold my hand up and admit I was amongst the first to think our new goalkeeper Aro Muric from Manchester City was a bit of a clown after the awkward pass he played to Josh Cullen, which gave Blackpool an undeserved foothold in a game the Clarets were dominating. That was a game we should have won comfortably in my honest opinion, and I unreservedly blamed Muric for the loss of two points.
I was at the Wigan game which we won comfortably despite what looked like another gift goal conceded by Aro when the referee awarded a penalty after our seemingly impetus goalkeeper cleaned out Wigan’s Callum Lang. At the time I thought the Wigan fans “bought” that penalty and the referee who let’s be honest, was a bit of a homer blew for a foul after Lang had lifted the ball over our Aro and his lobbed effort went just wide. Incidentally, Lang deserved to be cleaned out for missing a sitter.
After watching the replay of the penalty decision a few times, I believe if the dreaded VAR was in play, that penalty decision would have been overturned but that’s another story entirely. It was pretty clear during the 90 odd minutes at the DW Stadium our Aro had been subjected to the hair dryer treatment from Vincent Kompany (VK) in the week’s training prior to the Wigan visit. Not once did he play a teammate into trouble and when needed he hit the ball long and when I say long, I really do mean long. Quite often I don’t travel that far to go on holiday.
Aro’s full name is Arijanet Anan Muric, he is Swiss by birth, (born 7.11.1998) but he opted to represent Kosovo because of his Kosovan family heritage. I mention this because he will be known to the Turf Moor loyal as Aro Muric or better still “Our Aro”. Until I saw him up close, I had not realised just how big a unit he is (6’6” – 1.98m). Aro is very commanding in the air, catches the ball cleanly and punches the ball for miles and please let’s all remember he is still only 23. He also possesses the rare ability to kick the ball with either foot.
In other words, he’s nowt but a lad, let’s all keep that in mind that and give him the benefit of the doubt when and if we need to. Pep Guardiola obviously rates him and that’s good enough for me. He is clearly a good shot stopper; we have already seen that and VK wants him to play out from the back and he is obviously carrying out the gaffer’s instructions. Ashley Westwood discussed this and said keeping possession and playing out from the back allows us to break the opposition lines and deny the “high press”, it’s also pretty obvious if we have the ball the other team can’t hurt us.
Six games into a new season, the new look Burnley team is coming on leaps and bounds and our Aro has a part to play in this season’s battle for one of the Championship’s three promotion places. Let’s all get behind our Aro, chant his name, applaud him senseless when he makes a save and give him a proper Burnley welcome. I suspect we might just have a Clarets legend in the making.
