In democratic countries the Conservative Party is one of the most electorally successful political parties in the world. But now it is in tatters.
Even when the parliamentary party is riven with splits they all unite well before the next Genera Election. But the Conservative party may be no better than 3rd in the next General Election. Their MPs know it. Even those with a majority of 10,000 know that they are likely to lose next time. So there is no point in being united in their views with each other. The Conservatives are split and not going to come together as a united force. They are split in numerous ways over numerous issues. At least 80 of their MPs detest Rishi Sunak for bringing down Boris Johnson. It is rumoured that Sir Graham Brady, Chairman of the 1922 Committee has already received Letters Of No Confidence. Conservative MPs are split over Europe / European Union. They are split over countless policy issues.
Since Conservatives know that they will be out after the General Election they are enthusiastically monetarising their status as MPs. All MPs not of London constituencies are provided with rent-paid London flats. In their constituency homes and in the London flats the water, gas and electricity bills are paid by the state. Every back bench MP's salary is £84,000. Every back bench MP has a yearly expenses allowance of £250,000 for use as a MP. Thus for their London flats they can buy enormous televisions, the best hi-fi, computers, broadcast quality video cameras etc. These items are meant to be for the MP to better do his / her job, they are not the personal property of the MP. They are meant to remain with the flat for the next MP to use. Do you suppose that these items will still be in those flats after the next General Election when those MPs have lost. No, those flats will be totally bear, hardly a light-bulb remaining.
In the unlikely event that a Conservative MP expecting to lose actually wins, some of the stuff bought on expenses will be returned to those flats for the ongoing comfort of that MP. The same process will occur at the next General Election, removal of the best assets and if re-elected the return of some of those assets to the flat.
