Thread: Where are you from?

    Where are you from?

There is yet another bust-up in the Royal Family about racism because an old dear asked a black lass "Where are you from?"

I'm going to have to reappraise my social "skill set" because it's a question I ask out of genuine curiosity.

A month ago, I boarded the train at Wigan bound for Euston and I was having a conversation with a black lass sat opposite me and asked, "Where have you come from".

She said she had been working for a couple of days in Glasgow and had boarded in Glasgow Central. I did not pursue the question any further and ask, "Thanks for that but where are you really from?"

I suppose it's how you frame the question, but in these days of "Super Wokeism" it's probably a question better not to ask.

Have the PC Brigade finally gone mad? What else can you expect a white, privileged octogenarian to say in reception small talk? Charlie boy had better baton down the hatches this morning.

    OTT or what?

Ngozi Fulani, chief executive of Sistah Space, detailed the conversation on Twitter, describing it as a “violation” and said the experience will “never leave me”.

BT, thanks for highlighting just how mad this world has become ----again!
I will often ask people "Where is that wonderful accent from?" and have never had any problem because I am either quite fluent in their language, know enough words to express a few niceties, or don't know anything, in which case I ask them how to say various things which increases my language knowledge.

In view of what is being said, this must be classed as being racist, however, I shall not stop because I do not get many chances to practice my Arabic and Swahili in Ashington.
Strangely enough, I was at football last night at Heaton Stannignton and was asked where I came from because of my accent ----I was not offended at all.

To ask where someone is from, could only be described as being racist is if the person being asked the question is extremely sensitive to racial issues. Which I think is their problem and not that of the person asking the question.

Being a Lancastrian yet working in Yorkshire, when asked where I was from and what I did, my answer was that I had come from God's Country (Lancashire) to the Dark Side (Yorkshire) doing missionary work.

B@stard! You nicked my line whilst I was living in Bingley. 12 years of taking civilization to the natives took its toll though I must admit!

My missus just reminded me that, with my refined East Lancashire accent, many people up this neck of the woods ask me which part of Yorkshire I am from! I should be really offended by this ----I think
