It was a sad sight to see Callum Styles set on his arse after Millwall failed to reach the Play Offs.
He looked sluffened at the prospect of returning to Barnsley to negotiate a transfer elsewhere for next season.
He did, however, insist on a low release clause in his contract before he went to Millwall on loan so he should be OK finding a new club.
Styles is like a tuppenny catherine wheel.
When first appeared there was excitement- when he started playing there was flashes and sparkle - everyone excited and saying WOW !!! - all of that quickly fizzled into a damp squib - everyone turning to each other shrugging and asking ‘was that it, is that all there is?’.
Ballax to him and his 'look at me, aren't I great all of a sudden' attitude.
We know there's a player in there of course, and I'd be interested to see what Micky D could get out of him.
However, I've got no time for him if hes just going to carry on acting like a spoiled kid who isn't getting his own way.
We need him selling and sharpish. His loan spell is now over and he's back on our wage bill which combined with Oulare and Iseka will set us back a few thousand a week.
I dont get the stick Styles gets, he was another victim of shocking coaches last season & messed about playing here there & everywhere , he is an international & an established championship player who the club wanted to cash in on & in fairness to the lad he did sign a new contract before going out on loan which clearly benefits the club when his inevitable transfer goes through , Rowatt knows what he is doing & a fit Styles features in his match day squad , they may have missed out on a play off place but Millwall have had a great season whether fans from other clubs like it or not. Styles is still a young player with a lot of potential , hopefully the lad has a better run with injuries & goes on to have a successful career , I wish him well .
Ahmad wanted Styles out on loan last summer to cut costs when it became clear he was not attracting any significant bids.
Styles took advantage by refusing to go unless he got a new contract containing a low release fee so he would not be trapped at Barnsley if he had to return. With all respect Shads I am not sure how this benefits the club other than ensuring he will be sold, but at a low fee dressed up as "undisclosed".
It benefits the club simply in my eyes because without signing the new contract he would now be leaving for free plus if we make it to the championship then he is under contract to us & therefore we have a championship player on our books who might decide stopping with us his is best option & therefore it would be one less player to buy .
Styles's contract does come to an end in the Summer of 2023 but Barnsley FC have the option to extend it a further year to Summer 2024.
Styles was fearful the club would take up this option and demand a significant transfer fee this summer , effectively trapping him at Oakwell a further year if no one made a decent bid. He can now use the release fee.
The above was the position prompting Styles to demand a release fee last summer prior to his loan move to Millwall.
His "new" contract, signed last summer containing the release fee, is until Summer 2025 but it allows Styles to leave at the level of his release fee at any time a club meets that valuation.
