Honestly - has anyone ever been in a hotel

…… on the Med that has such dense lush vegetation up against the hotel that they feared fire ???
Vegetation I’ve seen on the Med near to hotels is at best sparse and at worst none existent.
Rhodes in particular is nearly like a desert.

Instead of mass hysteria why not just pack your suitcase and a few bottles of water and go and stand on the beach.
When the fire blows through - time to get back to the pool and have a beer.

    Get real Nudge.

Flights have been arranged to get hundreds of Britons out of Rhodes, as thousands continue to flee wildfires on the Greek island - and new evacuations were announced on Corfu.
Tourists and residents huddled in schools and shelters on Sunday in Rhodes, with many evacuated on private boats from beaches as flames menaced resorts and coastal villages.
Scores of others were forced to spend the weekend sleeping rough, on beaches, pool sun loungers or on the streets.
A total of approximately 19,000 people have been rescued from the island, in one of the largest evacuations in Greek history.
Greece's Emergency Communications Service has also now published evacuation orders for some areas of Corfu after wildfires were also reported there.
People in the areas of Santa, Megoula, Porta, Palia, Perithia and Sinies on the island have been told to leave on Sunday evening.

People fighting to get on boats - others falling off boats into the sea.
It’s mass hysteria if you ask me.
Makes me wonder what would happen if this generation had to go through the 2nd World War ?

Keep away from the forests and there’s hardly any vegetation on that island.

I realise you are on another provocative wind up to get a reaction Nudge but there is no way i would be the Brave Brit, Carry On Up the Khyber style, buying beer as high winds were blowing burning ash and vegetation falling down near my hotel.
The young kids there must be frightened to death.

Strong winds blowing burning debris about is not what you want near hotels , housing , buildings etc , all these hotels will have gas supplies to say that it is a dangerous situation is putting it lightly , families needed to be evacuated & rightly so .

Ive been in a fire Nudge. Seriously I know i have a go at you all the time, but if you’d experienced the terror of being in a burning room as I have youd know why they ran. I opened a door at work to be faced with the whole roof alight, 300 people in the building below me and I was in charge of the building……… believe me….you dont have time to think

    I’ve been in three fires.
One at home - which spread from a shop - the fire brigade soon dealt with that - but everything in the house was then covered in an oily substance and soot.
And two fires at my then girlfriends farm late at night which involved an arsonist running around the farm.
During the second incident the arsonist was caught.

The farm incidents were like scenes out of a horror movie with old wooden barns and massive stacks of straw set on fire.

My point about the fire in Rhodes is that much of the footage from there is of people stood in large open bare ground areas with hardly a blade of grass around them.
Absolutely nothing to fear - but mass hysteria has gripped the crowd.
Much of it I suspect whipped up by the media.
Is this Britains new Dunkirk spirit ?

The British news coverage has focussed very largely on Brits on holiday near beaches with far less coverage of the effects of the fire on the local population and their property.

Yes - it’s very likely that the local population is in far bigger danger - as many locals live in small holdings with olive and fruit trees right up to their front doors.
I might be proved wrong - but I’d be very surprised to see big hotels that have been burnt out.
And even then - there’s usually big open spaces nearby where people can congregate in safety.
I’ve been to the Med quite a number of times and I can’t think of one hotel that Ive stayed in where I would abandon the resort if the countryside around the resort caught fire.
