I'm a little puzzled about our use of the loan system given that a couple of goalkeepers excepted, we don't seem to be getting players who are making a significant impact. Thinking back to some of the loans we've had in the past, the current ones are somewhat underwhelming and it would appear that Williams isn't too confident with the current crop.
Whilst I understand the need for cover, I'm sure that the parent clubs would expect their players to be getting some game time, something which seems unlikely at present.
I think now is the time to unleash the on loan signings. Injuries and the thin squad should logically lead to this happening now.if not now then when would be my question.!?
I honestly think there's something we're not being told about these 2 defenders who simply can't get into the team. When Tipton was signed the day before the season started the club put a statement out on the website saying that they had known about the need to strengthen defensively since the end of last seaon but had to wait to get the right player in, so why hasn't he been playing. Has something gone off in training to cause this?
I don’t think there’s anything we’re not being told. I’m not sure I understand what we’re supposed to be told anyway? From what I’ve seen so far, I wouldn’t put them in the first team ahead of our current options.
LW has a squad of players in which to pick his best 11. Loan or permanent is irrelevant.
LW must be hesitant. I bet neither have played much in genuine back 3s, even at U21 level, let alone being pitched into men's football in just a 3. Both looked alright against Derby, especially Macari I thought. But Tipton got skinned for 1 goal against Derby and didn't we see Macari exposed for pace at least one time during that game?
It's a lot to ask, but LW is going to have to do it at some point. The Right sided defender spot has changed about 5 times already this season Brindley-Rawlinson-Baldwin-Brindley-Macari-Brindley again. I'd say Macari's performance was above average for that position this season, so why not give him a go. Or Tipton if LW thinks he's ahead in the queue. Let's see what they've got.
I could see premier clubs in future not wanting to loan us any of their young up and coming players, if we are not prepared to give them game time.. Our own defenders at times are a disaster waiting to happen.
My concern with quite a few of our loan signings in recent years is that they’ve had very little experience of men’s football. I’d try to make it a rule that, generally, we sign loanees who have already proven themselves at our level (or higher - like Jodi Jones). Either that or they’re just obvious talents like McGregor or Grealish, but we know they don’t come around very often.
I’ve never really understood the logic of signing squad fillers on loan - makes us an unattractive club for others to send their players to, and doesn’t really benefit us either.
