    Crowd surges

What's the worst crowd surge or crush you have ever been in?

For me it was Anfield in the early 80's. 10'000 Millers in attendance. I was aroundc13 years old. I was stood up in the away section. It was already the fullest away end I had been in when all of a sudden 3 or 4 Millers fans went down with cuts to the head. Liverpool fans outside were throwing stones in. We couldn't move. It was like shooting fish in a barrel. There was a surge and my arm was crushed up against a crash barrier. I was in agony and felt that it was about to break at any moment. All of sudden I was lifted upwards by an absolute giant of a man who stood me on the crash barrier.

I never saw this guy again but he saved me from getting a broken arm and much worse.

I've a couple of examples for you.

Down the pit when looking to ride the chair out of the pit. We had to go through a very low tunnel about a yard wide to come out of the other side and queue up waiting your turn to get on the chair. Many a time they was always some idiot(s) who insisted on pushing forward like a scrum. It could become very frightening at times to be crushed like a sardine in a can with nowhere to go as the tunnel was about 15 yards long.
On one such occasion someone tripped and we all went down on a heap while others from behind fell on us. This happened on many occasion I hasten to add. Thinking about it now makes me shiver.

As for football, it has to be after a night game at Millmoor. As many may recall, a lot of fans would move across to the corner floodlight on the corner near the Millmoor Hotel in readiness to make a hasty exit at full time. My school mate and me at the time, we were about 11, were getting more and more crushed on exiting until I heard my mate cry out and disappear. All I could hear was his screaming as he was getting trod on.

Suddenly someone reached down and yanked him up and high above everyone's heads. The man was yelling for people to stop shoving and let him out which they did, I gratefully just grabbed the mans coat from behind and was dragged out with them both. After what may have been a few seconds that seemed like a lifetime to me, my mate was lowered to the ground by the big man. He started shouting, screaming and crying all as one, he had been that petrified of being crushed. That was the very last game he attended at Millmoor. After that, I also use to wait for the surge/crowd to empty before I made my exit.

    Was actually Hillsborough

Can’t exactly remember the game but I had gone there with my mate from school. We were in the kop ( then without a roof) and decided to leave a couple of minutes early to avoid the crush but mistimed it. I was at the top of the steps of the kop when the whistle blew and I got caught in the crowd, my feet left the floor and was carried down the steps right to the bottom before I met terra firma
