Barnsley FC - Post £4m Losses, During Their 2022-23 Season.

Barnsley FC have posted a loss of £4m during their 2022-23 season following
    relegation from the championship.
Accounts published this week show the reds incurred a operating loss of £5.9m,
but made £1.9m from player trading.
Turnover reduced by more than £5m from £15m to £9.5m, mainly due to the
decrease in money from the EFL & TV deals, because they were in league one.

Matchday income increased by almost £500,000 - a 17% rise attributed to home
attendances, being about 2,000 higher on average than the relegation season,
    & the play-off campaign.

Shareholders injected £6m of equity into the club during the year, ' to ensure
that the club was able to meet its ongoing financial commitments ', the board
have also put in a further £3.6m this season, according to account statement.

The accounts period include the sales of Carlton Morris, Cauley Woodrow,
Callum Brittain, & Michal Helik among others.
Not all of the fees for those were received that season, as the deals are structured
in instalments, while they also paid some fees for incoming players.

Thoughts - Key [B] Barnsley statement. [ELK] My thoughts.

[B] Decrease in EFL & TV deal money ------- [ELK][ Millers to face this issue. ]

[B] Loss matchday income in championship, in relegation year, but picked up in league one. -

[ELK] [ We have seen empty seats this season, but the club got a decent amount of season
ticket money in advance, will fans decide not renew season tickets for next season, &
just select certain games to watch. ]

[B] Shareholders £6m - Board £3.6m pumped into club, to meet ongoing finances.

[ELK] [ What shareholders do the Millers have, is it a one-man show, so TS foots the bill ]

[B] Barnsley being paid in instalments for players sold, which is normal.

[ELK] [ Are the Millers being paid in instalments for Barlaser by Middlebrough, so not yet
got the full transfer fee, same with Washington to Derby County. ]

The accounts next year will show over £8m coming in to the club from the sales of Mads Andersen and Liam Kitching so I reckon the financial situation is now probably stable but not fantastic either .

Although I pretty much doubt we will see any of that money invested back on the field .

Scary stuff of what’s in store for us then £ wise, other than Johannsen we have no assets to sell for big money and have numerous players Eaves Hugill etc on long term contracts and big wages I’d love Johanssen to stay but obviously he’s got to go for his international prospects and looking at it now makes you wonder why we didn’t sell in January as a championship player rather than his value as a league 1 player

Hardly the first time we've ended up in league one is it ?
    I'm sure we'll be fine.

What did for us was the £14.2m wage bill in our last championship season on the back of the covid season .

That's now reduced to £9.2m as a league one club but still uncomfortably high none the less for a third tier club .

Getting the balance between financial common sense and fans expectations along with history that we should be competing at the top end of league one is probably the dilemma we face today .

Fine whilst we've players to sell for good money , we really did well to rinse £5m out of Coventry City for Liam Kitching , to say the least .

We may not always be able to pull that off .
