Wayne Fairclough was sent off after only 20 minutes for a late tackle, Neil Warnock was banished to the stand for coming onto the pitch after the incident.

2nd leg we won 3-1. Levelling on aggregate before Shrewsbury scored a late penalty to go through to get dumped out by Swindon 6-1 on agg in the next round. They probably did us a favour as we went up that season without the League Cup distraction.

Have many good memories of playing for Shrewsbury under Jake king. Soon as Bruno joined us when I was a youngster the changing room got even better banter was unbelievable between him and lee Steele.
Notts v salop is always a fixture I look forward too.

I remember that second leg better than some games from last season. Incredible atmosphere for how many people were there. The sense of injustice when we went out was only matched by the Bristol Rovers Leyland Daf game later that season.

David Moyes in the shrews side….we played them 4 times that season.

    3-0 Loss
    3-1 Win
    4-0 Win
    2-2 Draw

I was at all of them. The 2-2 was by far my favourite as we were 2-0 down and pulled it back from nowhere. It was the game when I knew we’d do whatever it took to get promoted.

They had a blond forward playing for them, but I only remember him in thr 2-2 game so he was either injured or out of form in the others, but he was a pain in the backside that evening, I think his name was spink.

Dean Spink. He got both their goals in that 2-2, the night the Wheelbarrow was invented, so you could say he played a very big part in that song being adopted as the comeback was a necessary ingredient.

It was an incredible atmosphere that night, especially when you consider there were, IIRC, less than 3,000 in the old Meadow Lane. The place was rocking in the second half, though, particularly when we levelled the tie. Happy memories.

Phil Turner scored a lovely chip in the 4-0 Boxing Day win - one of my favourite Notts goals at the Lane.

2,559, the 3rd lowest League Cup attendance we'd ever had at Meadow Lane at the time (10th lowest to 2024).
It was the only non-Associate/Full Members home game I missed during the Warnock era.
