Back in the day my son and I would have gone to the first round of the League Cup played at somewhere as close as Wigan. Both first teams going at it hell for leather in the hope of meeting a big club in the second round draw.
Tonight both managers seem to see it as not much more than a chance to try out players in weakened teams played in front of a virtually empty stadium.
I am a hypocrite having Sky that has caused the situation. Even though the full Barnsley match is available to watch on Sky I shall be watching Gillette Soccer Special with all the goals from the 32 games being shown during the programme just after they have been scored. More entertaining for me than an empty Wigan Stadium where the barking of the coaches can be heard over the "crowd".
The sofa, Emmerdale as a "starter", a bottle of malt, a feast of goals, is much more appealing than driving over to Wigan and back.
