    RomaRed Match Thoughts--Wigan-v-Barnsley ----Carabao Cup

From his pre match interview Clarke sees this game as an opportunity to have look at some fringe/ youth players.

Hats off to those travelling to Wigan tonight.

Back in the day my son and I would have gone to the first round of the League Cup played at somewhere as close as Wigan. Both first teams going at it hell for leather in the hope of meeting a big club in the second round draw.

Tonight both managers seem to see it as not much more than a chance to try out players in weakened teams played in front of a virtually empty stadium.

I am a hypocrite having Sky that has caused the situation. Even though the full Barnsley match is available to watch on Sky I shall be watching Gillette Soccer Special with all the goals from the 32 games being shown during the programme just after they have been scored. More entertaining for me than an empty Wigan Stadium where the barking of the coaches can be heard over the "crowd".

The sofa, Emmerdale as a "starter", a bottle of malt, a feast of goals, is much more appealing than driving over to Wigan and back.

    1st Half
Cosgrove on 31 minutes - in my playing days I would have back heeled that into the net.

We are playing some good stuff - quick slick football going forward - great to see - but we have no outlets up front - Marsh being the only one.
Yoga playing well - but gave away a pen when they broke through on goal.
New goalkeeper Gaba can’t pass the ball - that’s a bad sign for him playing at Barnsley.

Pines is like a black Hercules - impressed.

I certainly like our energy and intent although we've not created enough.

Three players stood art fo me first aif- Russell looks so much fitter and so much sharper, class on the ball and gonna be a real asset for us this season imo.
Pines looks a class act. Great sense of positioning, quick, reactive and a cool head.
Craig looks a real player, well impressed wi this lad.

Silly naivety from Yoganathan for the penalty but it's only the lads second game. However, he looks a threat going forward with his pace and skill.

Hopefully we can get back in the game second half

    Ooohhh God.
We win on penalties - but FGS we should have walked this.
Again - as similar to Friday against Mansfield - a hat full of chances missed.
We absolutely pummelled Wigan - and it’s worrying that by the end of the 90 minutes we could only manage a draw.

Definitely deserved it, but that miss from Watters!!!!! and what the hell was Luca doing with that penalty?
New keeper looks big and strong good debut, having Pines back is massive, Russell looks like a different player so far! MOM in both games for me.

Should've won in 90 mims as other posters have already said.
However, like on Friday night, I was looking at our shape, our set up, our workrate and our style of play. I was again impressed. Unfortunately the inability to convert our dominance into goals was slightly frustrating but if we keep doing the right things then the goals will come with a bit more composure.

I like the intent, I love the workrate and I like the pressing and hurrying of the opposition.

Well done lads, we got what we deserved in the end
