A group of followers of Notts County in the 1870-80s were a notorious Family Gang who surname was Lamb, they originated from the narrow marsh area of nottingham, an area which basically was the wild west of its time, and which they ruled , even the police were very cautious about going into this area,
with the instructions that in even in daylight hours two policemen should go in together.
the Lambs and their followers were also fans of Bendigo who came from this area, and were noted for their fighting drunkeness and rowdyness.
for some reason Notts were labelled with the Tag of 'the Lambs' because of these Fans,. however wanting to distance them selves from these rowdys as football was becoming a higher profile sport and prior to entering the foootball league, the name was dropped in favour of the new chosen name of The Magpies
