    Talking Tyrone Mings

Only just seen this on BBC football, but just what indeed was Mings thinking, picking the ball up to place for his keeper? One of the strangest penalty awards I've seen and cost Villa the match. Hey, ho its the Vile so maybe not too much sympathy...

It was a very strange action to take. I can’t understand how he didn’t realise that Martinez had actually taken the goal kick.

That happened in a Championship game last year and the ref ignored it as a schoolboy error and would not have been in the interest of the spirit of the game to give a penalty.
It was the VAR people who brought the ref's attention to it. Pyss poor decision regardless of who was playing.

I think the problem started when they allowed goal kicks to be taken from a non stationary ball but the goal keepers were still taking the kicks. Now with the passing out from the back, when exactly is the ball in play?

Common sense should have prevailed as it did in the Arsenal game when Gabriel did the same, regardless of you follow this was a stupid decision. Villa didn't play well enough do get anything from this game but a horrible way to lose it.

It was the correct decision. If the goalie takes the goal kick, even a short one and the player picks the ball up it is hand ball, therefore a penalty is the correct decision. Mings should have been paying attention. If you allow that, what other misdemeanours do you ignore?

Won’t comment as at the moment Villa are on a different planet to entertaining football than where we are!

That's irrelevant though 'Al, and yes it is the correct decision but not really in the spirit of the game, especially when refs have exercised discretion where it happened with Arsenal for example.
