So I've just read 'Inside Crewe' magazine and now know the answer to my questions. It's all part of 'fill the ground for a tenner' effort for the Colchester game which is being mainstreamed on SKY. I know that talks included the idea of ?9 for 9,000 but the club opted for a tenner to fill the stadium.
Last seasons discount matches just happened to be a disaster results-wise and I hope that those who took advantage of those occasions are not put off by their experiences. The Alex were just short of 8,000 last time (Barrow) so I hope people come this time. Hopefully, a tenner will entice U's fans to fill their allocation (be a dismal effort if they don't!). Our current home attendances (by Crewe fans) is about 4,500 so the home turnout needs to be double that. As I say it's on Sky so some people may not fancy a chilly night at Gresty Road when it's on the telly.
One hope is that the Alex can cope with the logistics of such a large crowd as against Barrow moving around under the stand and getting a hot drink was nigh on impossible. Perhaps the club need to tender for a few 'pop-ups' around the stadium to ease the pressure.
Finally, I have to hope that Cheshire's boys in blue can also get their act together on the night, particularly at the end of the game. Having such a large body of people emerging from the ground will require some stoppage of traffic. At least, with the relative lack of away support, there will be no need to close Gresty Road off to those of us that have a train to catch ( or indeed to shovel Crewe fans headlong into traffic on South Street as they usually do!)
