    What do we really want?

I've been wondering about this since the Port Vale loss....before Vale we were winning and playing well and all thoughts were on let's get promoted.
But since, I've had to reflect...are we good enough to stay in L1 if we did get promoted and, in turn what do I really want from being a passionate Notts fan?
Is it just onwards and upwards at all costs? Or is it to go to games, watch good football and lots of wins and goals...and happy faces?
Is it better to be doing well in a lower league than struggle in a higher...and then, God forbid, do a Carlisle or a Luton or a Notts of old.....over reach and then implode?
Steady, balanced progression v meteoric rise?
I don't know( nobody does) how we would fare if we did get promoted, but I'm anxious that we would need serious recruitment....but do we still have that capacity with Montague gone etc?

So, I ask myself.....should we just enjoy the season as best we can and don't panic( Mr Mannering) if we fall short.....and look to strengthen again next season....but, obviously, still hope for lots of good football, wins and if promotion does come...great.
    It's not easy is it?

Can only speak for myself. I am actually 100% happy with where the club is and how it's going. I want us to get into L1 and ultimately get into the playoff places in L1. If we ever sneak into the champsionship, great, well done. But I don't want us to go bankrupt trying.

As things stand I would never want us to get into the premier league. But I wouldn't be like depressed if we did. Just not a goal I'm interested in right now.

The team we have right now could probably stay up in L1 and I would be very confident we'd strengthen significantly in the event of promotion.

I'd say let's get up and worry about next year then.
We will have to lift our game considerable from yesterday's performance though.

We don’t have the luxury of deciding when to go up - if we end up in the top three by May 3 or win the playoffs, we can face the next challenge then. We could have a brilliant side at the end of the season, but there’s no guarantee some of those players wouldn’t then be sold for a profit (especially thinking of Jatta and Bass here).

A thought that I've been having too OP
Southampton, Leicester, Mansfield, though obviously we're far bigger than Mansfield, bigger support, ground, infrastructure etc, top end league one for sure.

Plenty of examples of Notts narrowingly missing out on promotion (arguably not ready for the step up) and then either getting relegated the following season or doing very poorly (Walker,, Murphy, Curle and Nolan campaigns followed by very bad seasons spring to mind). A fair few would have consoled themselves after missing out that it was progress and we just needed another year to be properly equipped to go up.
You have to grab promotion whilst it's on the table.

Promotion to League One as that is Notts County's natural level, it's been 10 years since we last played there, the longest spell in the club's history. When there we will all have to be incredibly patient as it is likely we'll struggle for at least the first year.

    Excellent! Thank you.
I think upthemagpies comment is the clincher fir me.....narrowly missing out on promotion is, indeed, no guarantee of progress the following season. So go for it if it's possible...
    Agreed.
But.....I'm not going in to a nose dive if we just miss out.....as long as we have sensible owners who want to see solid progress maintained....then I'm happy with that.
I LOVE the tension of being a Notts fan....far more downs than ups but I'm still enjoying it.
Can you imagine being a ( so called) Top Premier league armchair fan living far away from Manchester, London or Liverpool....' OMG...we're only 4th this year...what rubbish. Let's go to the shopping centre now darling...'
When we lose, I'm miserable for ages but somehow am still all excited for the next game.
    Is this normal? Addiction?

Sometimes the ups outnumber the downs?
