Notts and The Loan Market

When I watch matches I regularly make mental notes to do a bit of research on those who've caught my eyes.
Watching Notts v Doncaster on Saturday two of the standout performers for Doncaster were Street and Crew.
Street produced the best traditional centre forward display I've seen at ML this season. The way in which he tested and bettered both Platt and Bedeau physically as well as hurting Notts in behind was exceptional.
Crew wasn't as eye catching, but equally effective. He broke up play, his defensive positioning was excellent and he was neat and tidy in possession a very accomplished CM performance.

Both are on loan at Doncaster. As is Thier first choice goalkeeper - Sherman-Lowe


Obviously Abbott has been a great find this season and has been one of Notts standout performers, but I can't help but feel Notts have under utilised the loan market this season.
Given injuries have held Notts back, any reason why there hasn't been much loan activity? 5 players are allowed in a first team squad I think?

I agree Street was excellent on Saturday but let’s be right if you look at his career before he went to Donny had we signed him you can bet some of our fans would kick off it wasn’t a stellar record.

Loans are in my opinion very tricky to get right and I can see why we try to avoid them unless a real gem pops up our model likes their own players so they can sell for a big profit.

Just for clarity I’m not against us loaning players just concluding what our model is/was the new guy might have different ideas though ?

When loans come off teams rightly get lauded, but as mentioned people would have lost their minds if we signed Street as a striker option as his record was dreadful.

Loans also have a downside when a team built on good loanees (much like Doncaster) cant repeat the trick twice and arent able to replace the great loanees of previous seasons (hence people correctly thinking Notts have a job on to replace Abbott).

The bros deal in upside and potential, if Jarvis and Whitaker continue to grow next season and become big players for us , il take that approach over gambling on loanees every season.

Whitaker's 6 month contract expires next month, so either us or him can say no to extending it.

He's had more poor games than good ones. But so have the others who signed in January. Can see him being offered an 18 month contract

He's still young and so should improve, but for the time being I agree. If we sign him, it should be as a squad player at best, not a long-term Crowley replacement.

I think we have to stop thinking in terms of “squad” players if we want to progress up the leagues. You’re only as good as your weakest link, and all that, and the best teams all have strength in depth. To achieve that, though, we’re presumably going to need a bigger budget, and good squads aren’t built overnight unless you’re a Wrexham or Birmingham.

I think Whitaker shows great promise and I'd be pleased if we offered him 2 years. He's lively, one of the few who looks like he enjoys the press. He has a good touch and is always looking to take the ball on the turn to get away from defenders. He's gets stuck in, yes he doesn't have the physicality yet, but that will come. He's technically better than most and I think his Academy background is evident. It must be a huge change playing against seasoned pro's and for me he's one for the not too distant future.

As we aren?t getting anything l, understandably) from our youth setup I am more than happy for us to get a player like Whitaker signed up for next season to see him develop if it financially makes sense. You shouldn?t just sign players for now unless you are a Wrexham or Birmingham. Jarvis is a good example, excited to see what he does next season. You need a mixture of potential and here and now signings.
